Pierre Kerkhoffs (born March 26, 1936 in Geleen , Netherlands ) is a former Dutch football player .

Career

Kerkhoffs is the son of a miner from the region of the Dutch state mines in the province of Limburg . He started his career at the regional Club Maurits . He later went to the Enschedese Boys , and from there to local rivals Sportclub Enschede , for which he played from 1959 to 1961; in his first season he ran there alongside old star Abe Lenstra . The striker then moved to PSV Eindhoven as the successor to Piet Kruiver . He immediately took a regular place, scored 19 goals and was runner-up in the Netherlands with PSV. In the following season 1962/63 PSV won the championship, Kerkhoffs was the top scorer of the Eredivisie with 22 goals . He played one more season in Eindhoven and then went to Switzerland to Lausanne Sport , for which he played from 1964 to 1971. In the 1964/65 season he scored 19 goals in the league and was also the top scorer in Switzerland. In the same year he scored six goals for Lausanne in the European Cup Winners' Cup , making him the top scorer there too. After his time in Lausanne, he worked for Neuchâtel Xamax for two years .

National team

Kerkhoffs played a total of 5 international matches for the Dutch national football team between 1960 and 1965 . Bondscoach Elek Schwartz changed him for the first time on a trip to Central America by the Oranje Elftal on June 26, 1960 in Mexico City in the game against Mexico , which the Dutch lost 3-1. On the same trip there was a 20-minute stint in Willemstad against the Netherlands Antilles (0-0) and a full game in and against Suriname (4-3). Almost two years later, in May 1962, he made his second full game; The Dutch lost 2-1 to Norway at the Ullevaal Stadium in Oslo . His last mission, also over 90 minutes, Kerkhoffs again had almost three years later on April 7, 1965 under coach Denis Neville . In the World Cup qualification there was a 0-0 draw against Northern Ireland in De Kuip .
