Hendrik "Henk" Groot (born April 22, 1938 in Zaandijk , Netherlands ) is a former Dutch professional footballer who was active for Ajax Amsterdam and Feyenoord Rotterdam in the 1960s .
In the 1960s, Groot was one of the best goal scorers in the Netherlands. In 1960 and 1961 he was the top scorer in the Eredivisie with 38 and 41 goals respectively. With a total of 195 goals, he is the Eredivisie's sixth-best goalscorer of all time. At Ajax he is the fourth best goalscorer in the club's history, third best of the Eredivisie era.
He came to AFC Ajax in 1959 with his older Buder Cees Groot from the second division IJVV Stormvogels from IJmuiden , where after-work professionalism was still practiced at the time. He introduced himself with a hat trick in his first league game against NAC Breda . In 1960 he won the Dutch championship under English coach Vic Buckingham . In the following season, under the now coach Keith Spurgeon, he won the cup where he scored all three goals in the final against NAC Breda between the 78th and 88th minute. With Ajax he also won the International Football Cup 1961/62 , the club's first international title win. In the final, he contributed three goals to the 4-2 victory over SC Feijenoord from Rotterdam.
The Italian first division club Lanerossi Vicenza made Groot an offer in 1963 that he liked. Ajax asked for a transfer fee of 250,000 guilders, but the Italians thought it was too much. Groot then had himself put on the transfer list, because in the transfer system of that time it had advantages for the player if he put himself on the transfer list. Groot then heard with mixed feelings that he had been taken over by Feijenoord for 250,000 guilders. He played there two seasons and scored 33 goals in the league. In his second season with the Rotterdam club, he won his second national championship and cup under Austrian coach Wilhelm Kment . Meanwhile, Ajax was going downhill. The club was only 13th in the 1964/65 season. When Jaap van Praag became chairman, Ajax bought the striker back for 375,000 guilders. The return was a requirement of the new coach Rinus Michels .
Under Michels, the now professional team with players like Sjaak Swart , Wim Suurbier , Piet Keizer and Johan Cruijff matured into a top team. Between 1966 and 1968 she won the championship three times and in 1967 the cup. With Ajax he also reached the final of the European Cup in 1968/69 , which was lost 4-1 to AC Milan . He was substituted in the final after half time.
Then he ended his football career. In 1970 he was elected to the Zaandijk municipal council.
