The 1996/97 season was the 41st season of the Eredivisie , the highest Dutch football league. PSV Eindhoven became champions for the 14th time . AZ Alkmaar had to relegate .

In the relegation, RKC Waalwijk and NEC Nijmegen prevailed, thus playing in the Eredivisie 1997/98 . For both, this means staying up.
