Ernest Anthonius Jacobus Faber (born August 27, 1971 in Geldrop ) is a Dutch former football player and current coach. With PSV from Eindhoven he won the championship four times , the cup once and the Supercup six times . The defender was also used once in the national team.

Club career

Faber was born in Geldrop, a few kilometers east of Eindhoven, and began playing football for the Eindhoven football club DBS. Already in the C1 youth he switched to the large neighboring club; In 1990 PSV gave him a professional contract. The regular central defender or Vorstopper , who occasionally also played on the outside positions in the defense, was loaned to the league competitor NEC from Nijmegen in the first season . Here, two days before his 19th birthday, on August 25, 1990, he made his debut in the Eredivisie ; NEC won  2-1 at MVV in Maastricht . NEC rose at the end of the season, in which Faber came to 30 games, from bottom of the table with 62 goals conceded. In the following season PSV loaned him to Sparta Rotterdam , where he played 32 games in the honor division. In the 1992/93 season he stayed at PSV and was able to celebrate his first appearance in the red and white striped jersey on September 2, 1992: in the 72nd minute he came on for Erwin Koeman in the 3-0 win over Cambuur Leeuwarden . Only 14 days later he made his international debut for the Eindhoven team: in the Champions League , he played in the first-round first leg against Žalgiris Vilnius , as well as in the second round and in five group stage games.

By the winter break of 1993/94, Faber had 23 league games at PSV in a year and a half before he was loaned out again in the second half of 1994, this time to FC Groningen . However, this was his last stop outside of Eindhoven; he spent the rest of his career from the summer of 1994 to the end of the 2003/04 season with PSV. However, he was prone to injury and had to undergo multiple operations on his knees, ankles and the Achilles tendon. In those ten years he only made 152 league games. The first of his only six league goals he scored for PSV in the match in Maastricht on April 14, 1995; just one minute after Richard Roelofsen had put MVV in the lead, Faber equalized to 1-1; the game ended 3-2 for PSV.

In the 2003/04 season he came on the field only twice. His last game for PSV was the home game against Feyenoord on March 14, 2004. After 67 minutes he came on as a substitute for Remco van der Schaaf . Then his professional career ended after 248 games with six goals in the Eredivisie, 45 games and one hit in European Cup competitions and 13 operations.

National team

In February 1998, bond coach Guus Hiddink invited Faber, who had played a very solid season with the reigning Dutch champions, to a training camp for the national team in Florida . The team should prepare for the upcoming World Cup there; Faber should fly as a newcomer. At the time, Frank de Boer and Faber's club colleague Jaap Stam , who had played all World Cup qualifiers together since October 1996 , formed the core of the central defense team .

In the first game of the training camp at the Pro Player Stadium in Miami , Stam and de Boer started as usual. Winston Bogarde came on for Stam at halftime , Faber stayed on the bench for 90 minutes. The Dutch won 2-0 against the US boys . Three days later, on February 24th, de Boer and Bogarde started against Mexico . After Patrick Kluivert and Wim Jonk had put their team in the lead within three minutes with a double strike , the game was as good as decided after 20 minutes; Hiddink had the opportunity to experiment. After making three changes during the break, Faber was also allowed on the field for Bogarde in the 58th minute and made his debut in Oranje , but the Mexicans scored two more goals after this substitution - the second of that, a penalty , caused Faber. Perhaps he would still have been named to the squad for the World Cup if he hadn't torn his Achilles tendon again in the last home game of the season with PSV. Faber's first international match was also his last.

Trainer

After the end of his active career, Faber first became a junior coach at PSV. In September 2006 he went as a coaching assistant to local rivals FC Eindhoven , where he temporarily replaced the dismissed Louis Coolen as head coach on October 24, 2007 . Since he did not have a license, Gerald Vanenburg was hired as his successor, who only stayed three months; on March 25, 2008 Faber was again interim coach, this time until the end of the season. He then returned to PSV , where he took over responsibility for the A1 junior team. For the 2010/11 season he took over as the successor to Jan Poortvliet as head coach at FC Eindhoven in the Eerste Divisie . Since the end of January 2011, he has also been one of Bert van Marwijk's assistant coaches in the national team , succeeding Frank de Boer ; this task ended with van Marwijk's contract termination following the European Championship in 2012 . After Fred Rutten's release from PSV, he returned to his home club on March 12, 2012, where he initially looked after the Eredivisie team together with interim head coach Phillip Cocu . Faber then worked as an assistant to the new head coach Dick Advocaat . The collaboration between Faber and PSV is planned until the end of the 2013/14 season, but then lasted until the end of the 2014/15 season.

For the new season, Faber moved to NEC Nijmegen as a coach with a two-year contract . As early as 2016, the termination of this contract at the end of the season was agreed and Faber signed a contract with FC Groningen .

In January 2018, Faber and the club came to the conclusion that the contract would not be extended when it expired in summer 2018.

Faber returned to PSV Eindhoven as head of the youth department. After the club dismissed Mark van Bommel as coach in mid-December 2019 , Faber was signed as the new coach until the end of the season.
