Winston Lloyd Bogarde (born October 22, 1970 in Rotterdam ) is a former Dutch football player .

Career

He began his career in 1988 with SVV . From 1989 to 1991 he played for Excelsior Rotterdam before moving to local rivals Sparta Rotterdam . In 1994 he signed with Ajax Amsterdam . With Ajax (under van Gaal ) he won the 1995 UEFA Champions League and was twice Dutch champion. After a brief stint at AC Milan , he returned to van Gaal in December 1997 with a move to FC Barcelona . With Barça he was Spanish champion twice.

For the 2000/01 season he moved to Chelsea , where he signed a four-year contract. Shortly after signing the contract, Chelsea manager Gianluca Vialli , who brought Bogarde to London, was sacked and replaced by Claudio Ranieri . Bogarde was rarely used under Ranieri, most recently in November 2002. Bogarde had to train in part with the Chelsea youth team, but he decided to sit out his well-paid contract until 2004, for which he had to take a lot of criticism. In November 2005 Bogarde ended his career.

For the Dutch national team , he played 20 games from 1995 to 2000. He made his debut on December 13, 1995 in a 2-0 win over Ireland .
