Franciscus "Frank" de Boer (born May 15, 1970 in Hoorn ) is a former Dutch football player and current coach . His twin brother, Ronald , who is ten minutes older, is also a well-known soccer player, both playing on the same teams for the majority of their careers. De Boer was a defender who also impressed with his good passes and free kicks. For the 2019 MLS season, he will take over the US franchise Atlanta United as head coach.
Career
In the club
De Boer's professional career began in 1988 at AFC Ajax in Amsterdam, where he had already played as a youth. At first he played as a left full-back , before moving to central defense later. He was part of the legendary Ajax team, which won the Champions League in 1995 , and has also won several Dutch championships and cups. Until January 1999 he played - together with his twin brother Ronald - at Ajax before he moved to FC Barcelona with his brother . With the also Dutch coach Louis van Gaal , he became Spanish champions with FC Barcelona in the same year. After that, however, he was unable to build on his earlier successes.
He also tested positive for nandrolone in April 2001 after the UEFA Cup game against Celta Vigo . Due to the fourfold increase in value, UEFA banned him from international matches for one year. De Boer continued to plead his innocence and appealed the decision. In addition, FIFA banned him from the national team. The bans were later reduced to just two and a half months. In 2003 he went to Turkey to Galatasaray Istanbul . During the winter break he left the club again and joined the Scottish club Glasgow Rangers . In 2004 he went to Al-Rayyan Sports Club in Qatar . For the 2005/06 season he moved within the league to Al-Shamal Sports Club . In April 2006, he had to end his career because of knee problems.
National team
As a central defender, he scored 13 goals in 112 games for the Dutch national team and finished fourth at the 1998 World Cup . De Boer has played the most games for Oranje after Edwin van der Sar and Wesley Sneijder .
Trainer
From 2007 he worked as a coach in the Ajax youth team and assistant coach of the Dutch national team . On December 6, 2010, Ajax Amsterdam De Boer continued as head coach until the 2010 winter break, as coach Martin Jol had left the club. During the winter break he signed a contract until 2014. He gave up his work for the national team. From August 9, 2016 to November 1, 2016 he was the head coach of Inter Milan .
On June 26, 2017, he was introduced as the new coach of the London Premier League club Crystal Palace . The club separated from him on September 11, 2017.
In December 2018, the US MLS franchise Atlanta United de Boers announced a signing for the 2019 season . Master coach Gerardo Martino had already announced in October that he would be resigning from the coaching office for personal reasons after the end of the season. The Dutchman won the US Open Cup with his new club in his first season . In the CONCACAF Champions League 2019 , however, de Boer failed with the team in the quarter-finals at CF Monterrey , in the league play-offs at Toronto FC .
