The al-Shamal Sports Club ( Arabic نادي الشمال الرياضي) is a sports club from Madinat asch-Shamal in Qatar . The men's soccer team plays in the country's second highest league, the Qatar Second Division.

history

The club was founded in 1980. The club's greatest success so far was the victory in the Sheikh Jassim Cup in 1996/97. The club has played in the Qatar Stars League several times . 1991/92 they finished last in the league, but one remained in the highest league. Also in the 1995/96 season, the club finished bottom of the table, but again they were spared relegation. The 1999/2000 season, which was finished last with only one point from 16 games, ended with relegation.

In the relegation games, al-Shamal won against Shabab and remained in the Qatar Stars League. Also in the 2000/01 season the club only won one point and since the relegation was not played, they were relegated directly to the Qatar Second Division . Only a year later they managed to get back up to the top of the league. Six years in a row, al-Shamal successfully averted another relegation to the Second Division, but after the 2007/08 season, the fall in the Second Division could no longer be avoided. After a direct return to the Qatar Stars League, you had to accept relegation to the Second Division again after the 2009/10 season.
