Aloysius Paulus Maria "Louis" van Gaal [ luˈwi vɑŋˈɣaːl ] (born August 8, 1951 in Amsterdam , Netherlands ) Knight in the Order of Orange-Nassau , is a former Dutch football player and coach . He was twice bond coach for the Dutch national team .

Career

As an active player, van Gaal played as a midfielder for RKSV de Meer in his youth . From 1971 to 1973 he was in the professional squad at Ajax Amsterdam - but without an assignment. He moved to Royal Antwerp in 1973 in the Belgian first division, where he played a few games as a substitute. In 1977 he returned to the Dutch first division, after Velsen for the Telstar club , with whom he was relegated to the second division. After that season, van Gaal moved to league rivals Sparta Rotterdam , where he was a regular player until 1986. He ended his career as a professional footballer at AZ Alkmaar , for which he played the 1986/87 season.

After a few appearances in the first few years of his professional career, van Gaal recorded 291 appearances in the Dutch Eredivisie in the last ten years . He then became an assistant coach at AZ Alkmaar . Then Leo Beenhakker brought him as an assistant coach to Ajax Amsterdam.

Coach at Ajax Amsterdam

After Beenhakker's departure in 1991, van Gaal became head coach. He had a successful time in this position: Ajax won three Dutch championships with him (1994, 1995 and 1996). Van Gaal also won the 1993 KNVB Cup and the Dutch Super Cup from 1993 to 1995. At the European level won Ajax in 1992 the UEFA Cup , defeating 1995 to AC Milan in the final of the Champions League . In 1995 Ajax won the World Cup against Gremio Porto Alegre on penalties . In 1996 Ajax moved into the Champions League final again, but this time lost to Juventus Turin on penalties .

The Ajax era he shaped in the 1990s also had an impact on the Dutch national football team , where Ajax players such as Patrick Kluivert , Clarence Seedorf , Marc Overmars , Frank and Ronald de Boer , Edgar Davids , Winston Bogarde , Michael Reiziger and Edwin van der Sar set up the scaffolding.

FC Barcelona and Bondscoach

In 1997 he moved to FC Barcelona ; During this time, his assistant was, among others, the Portuguese José Mourinho , who was originally brought to the team as a translator , and later coached at Chelsea , Inter Milan and Real Madrid . Van Gaal helped the team to two championships and one win of the Spanish Cup and in 1997 to win against Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Super Cup . Despite these successes with the Catalans, van Gaal was heavily criticized by the fans for temporarily bringing up to eight Dutchmen to Barça.

In 2000 van Gaal moved back to the Netherlands, where he took over the national team for qualifying for the 2002 World Cup . The Dutch failed to qualify and Van Gaal was replaced by Dick Advocaat .

He returned to Barcelona, this time with assistant coach Andries Jonker , but was replaced by Radomir Antić after half a year .

Technical Director at Ajax Amsterdam

On November 1, 2003, Louis van Gaal became Technical Director at Ajax. During his tenure, the Swede Zlatan Ibrahimović was sold , against whom coach Ronald Koeman ultimately fought in vain. In October 2004 he left Amsterdam again.

AZ Alkmaar

In the summer of 2005 he replaced coach Co Adriaanse at AZ Alkmaar , who moved to FC Porto . In 2009 van Gaal won the championship with AZ Alkmaar. At the end of 2009 he was voted Coach of the Year in the Netherlands.

FC Bayern Munich

In the summer of 2009, van Gaal moved to FC Bayern Munich . He succeeded Jupp Heynckes , who at the end of the season ended his role as interim coach in succession to Jürgen Klinsmann and was signed as head coach for Bayer 04 Leverkusen for the new season . Van Gaal's assistant coaches were Andries Jonker , who was also his assistant in Barcelona, and Hermann Gerland .

After difficulties at the beginning of the season - there was already speculation about his dismissal - van Gaal succeeded in converting Bayern's playing system to an attractive attack football based on possession. The game against the winger Franck Ribéry and the Dutch international Arjen Robben , who moved from Real Madrid to Bayern after the start of the season , was characteristic. In addition, van Gaal once again made a name for himself as a sponsor of young players and integrated the young players Thomas Müller and Holger Badstuber from the youth division of the club , who both soon became national players, as well as Diego Contento .

At the end of his first season with the club, he won the championship and DFB Cup double with Bayern Munich . In the cup final against Werder Bremen , Bayern won 4-0, which was the highest final victory of a team since 1972. He became the first Dutch coach to win the German championship title.

He also led the club into the final of the Champions League against Inter Milan. This season he was, together with the coach of the final opponent José Mourinho, one of six coaches who reached the European championship final with two or more clubs. He alone secured the record for the greatest period of time between the first and the next reaching the finals as a coach: 15 years. The final at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu ended 2-0 for Inter Milan.

The contract with FC Bayern Munich was extended early on September 27, 2010 for a further year until June 30, 2012.

In the 2010/11 season, van Gaal and Bayern Munich missed defending the DFB Cup title in March 2011 by losing in the semi-finals to FC Schalke 04 , after defending the German championship title was previously only mathematically possible.

On March 7, 2011, the club announced that van Gaal's contract as coach would be terminated early and amicably at the end of the season. The reason for this is the different views on the strategic direction of the club. On April 10, 2011 - after the 29th match day - he was given an early leave after his team had played 1-1 in Nuremberg and thus slipped to fourth place in the table. This put the qualification for the Champions League for the 2011/12 season in jeopardy, which ultimately moved the board of Bayern Munich to take this step. Earlier in the season there were several disputes between van Gaal and the board of directors over the promotion of young talent such as David Alaba and Thomas Kraft . His successor until the end of the season was van Gaal's previous assistant and assistant coach Andries Jonker .

Philipp Lahm named the van Gaalsche game idea as the cornerstone for FC Bayern's triple victory in 2013. Both Uli Hoeneß and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, despite personal difficulties with him, praised his professional qualities and services to FC Bayern.

Sports director at Ajax Amsterdam

On November 16, 2011, Ajax Amsterdam announced that van Gaal would take over the post of sports director by July 1, 2012 at the latest. Johan Cruyff and ten coaches from the Ajax Amsterdam football school filed a lawsuit against Van Gaal's hiring because, in their opinion, it contradicted the agreed "football technical structure plan". The court of appeal in Amsterdam upheld the lawsuit because the fifth board member, Johan Cruyff, had been excluded from the decision-making process.

Bondscoach for the second time

Louis van Gaal as Dutch national coach (2013)

On August 1, 2012 van Gaal took over the national team of the Netherlands. Previously, Bert van Marwijk had resigned after the team had been knocked out of the preliminary round at the 2012 European Championships in Poland and Ukraine . Van Gaal signed a two-year contract until after the 2014 World Cup , after which he handed over the office to Guus Hiddink . He reached 3rd place with the "Elftal". After losing to Argentina in the semi-finals on penalties, they defeated hosts Brazil 3-0 in the "small final"

Manchester United

On May 19, 2014, Manchester United signed van Gaal for the 2014/15 season as the successor to David Moyes, who was dismissed during the preseason . He signed a contract that ran until June 30, 2017. Interim player-coach Ryan Giggs became his assistant. In July 2015, van Gaal announced that he would end his career when his contract expired. On May 23, 2016, Manchester United separated from him after he failed to qualify for the Champions League with the team in fifth place in the Premier League. Two days earlier he had won the FA Cup with the team .
