Andries Jonker (born September 22, 1962 in Amsterdam ) is a Dutch football coach .

Career

In the Netherlands

Jonker began his coaching career in 1997 at the age of 35. At that time he was the assistant coach of Dick de Boer , who had taken over the Dutch club FC Volendam in the Eredivisie for the 1997/98 season . For the following season, the club rose to the Eerste Divisie , but both coaches kept their posts. After Volendam was only eighth in the league and thus missed the goal of immediate promotion, the board decided to replace de Boer with Jonker. In the summer of 1999 he became the head coach of a professional team for the first time. But the Dutchman disappointed, and the club was in the relegation region of the Eerste Divisie. After the end of the season, the two parties separated again and so Jonkers' first head coach station was short-lived.

One year in Barcelona and return to the Netherlands

For a short time it became quiet about the football teacher, before his compatriot Louis van Gaal took over the top European club FC Barcelona in 2002 and lured Jonker to Spain as an assistant coach . After there was no success there, Jonker moved back home, where he became the head coach of MVV Maastricht . However, in three years he failed to return the club to the top class. In 2006/07 Dennis van Wijk brought him to the Eredivisie with Willem II Tilburg . After an unsuccessful start to the 2007/08 season, van Wijk had to vacate his seat, which Jonker took over in November 2007. He took the former player Edwin Hermans as his assistant. But as in Maastricht and Volendam, the coach didn't convince the board here either, and in February 2009 they went different ways again.

FC Bayern Munich

When it became known that van Gaal would switch to Bayern Munich as a coach in summer 2009 , he remembered Jonker and brought him to the coaching staff of the German record champions. In April 2011, after Louis van Gaal's leave of absence at FC Bayern Munich, he was promoted to head coach until the end of the season after the 29th match day , with the task of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League for the 2011/12 season . On the penultimate game day he achieved this with his team's 8-1 victory at FC St. Pauli and the simultaneous defeat of competitor Hannover 96 at VfB Stuttgart. For the 2011/12 season he took over the second team of FC Bayern, which was relegated to the Regionalliga Süd . After a weak first half of the season, the club announced that Jonker would no longer coach the second team for the 2012/13 season. From the 2012/13 season, Jonker was supposed to take over the U19 team from Bayern, but did not accept the position for “family reasons”. Initially it was planned to tie him to the club in a different position, but in mid-April 2012 Jonker announced that he would be leaving Munich with his family and taking on new challenges.

VfL Wolfsburg

For the 2012/13 season Jonker signed a contract with VfL Wolfsburg , where he initially acted as assistant coach to Felix Magath . After his release he assisted interim trainer Lorenz-Günther Köstner .

Arsenal FC

Since the 2014/15 season, Jonker has been head of the youth academy of the English first division club Arsenal .

Return to VfL Wolfsburg

In February 2017 Jonker returned to VfL Wolfsburg and took over the VfL Bundesliga team, which was in 14th place in the table after 22 match days with 22 points, from Valérien Ismaël, who had previously been dismissed . His first game as coach of VfL Wolfsburg was a 1-1 draw at 1. FSV Mainz 05 . With VfL, Jonker managed to stay in the Bundesliga in the relegation against Eintracht Braunschweig .

On September 18, 2017, he was released from his duties after four match days of the new season.
