Valérien Ismaël (born September 28, 1975 in Strasbourg ) is a former French football player and current coach with German nationality . The defender became German champions with both SV Werder Bremen (2004) and FC Bayern Munich (2006).

Childhood and youth

Valérien Ismaël was born to a father from Guadeloupe and an Alsatian in Strasbourg and grew up there. The father was stationed as a soldier in the neighboring German town of Kehl .

Player career

Ismaël started playing football at AS Holtzheim in 1982 and moved to Racing Strasbourg's football school two years later . From 1993 onwards he worked for their professional team for four years in Division 1 , the first French league. He scored one goal in 87 league games. In 1997 he moved to the Premier League for newly promoted Crystal Palace and was used in 13 games in the second half of the 1997/98 season . Then he went to the then French master RC Lens .

During his four-year club membership, Ismaël was loaned to Racing Strasbourg in 2001 and rose with his youth club from Division 1 (now Ligue 1), but won the French Cup . In 2002 Racing Strasbourg signed him for good. Towards the end of the 2002/03 season he was no longer considered by the then coach Ivan Hašek .

Change to the Bundesliga

Valérien Ismaël 2006

After one season, Ismaël moved to SV Werder Bremen in the summer of 2003 to strengthen the defensive, as the previous regular Frank Verlaat had signed with FK Austria Vienna . He made his debut in the Bundesliga on August 2, 2003 (1st matchday) in a 3-0 win in the away game at Hertha BSC . With Werder Bremen he was champion and DFB Cup winner in his first season 2003/04. His trainer was Thomas Schaaf .

From 2005 until the winter break of the 2007/08 season he played for FC Bayern Munich . Under coach Felix Magath , Ismaël was considered a safe central defender as long as he was spared injuries: If he played 30 Bundesliga games in his first season, he was only used once in the following season (2006/07). Shortly after the start of the season, on August 15, 2006, he suffered a broken calf and tibia during training after a benign tumor had been removed from this spot a few weeks earlier. Ismaël only played a competitive match on March 3, 2007: In the Regionalliga Süd he scored a goal in the 2-1 defeat of Bayern II at SV Elversberg .

In January 2008 Ismaël moved to Hannover 96 , but in September 2008 he was hit again on the knee he had operated on two years earlier; since then he has not been able to get rid of the pain due to bone edema . He played the last game of his career on September 19, 2008 (5th match day) in the 4-0 defeat at Bayer 04 Leverkusen . Because of his knee problems, he ended his career in September 2009.

National team

Ismaël played for the national teams of the U-17 to U-21 age groups and for the U-23 of the French Football Association . He was denied a game for the senior national team . There was also no use in the German senior national team , for which Ismaël applied in 2005.

Coaching career

After his time as an active player, Ismaël acquired the coaching license in November 2011 and was then coach on November 27, 2011 with the second team of Hannover 96 in the Regionalliga Nord . For the 2013/14 season he took over the U-23 of VfL Wolfsburg as the successor to Lorenz-Günther Köstner . He signed a contract that ran until June 30, 2016. With VfL he won the championship in the Regionalliga Nord , but failed in relegation to the 3rd division at SG Sonnenhof Großaspach .

For the 2014/15 season Ismaël was the coach of 1. FC Nürnberg, who had been relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga . On August 3, 2014, he made his debut as coach of the Franks in a 1-0 victory on the first matchday of the second division season 2014/15 . On the second match day he lost the Frankenderby with 1. FC Nürnberg with 1: 5 at SpVgg Greuther Fürth . On August 15, 2014 1. FC Nürnberg was eliminated in the first round of the cup against third division club MSV Duisburg . After only four wins in 13 league games, Ismaël was given a leave of absence from the club on November 10, 2014.

From summer 2015 he coached the U-23 team of VfL Wolfsburg again as the successor to Thomas Brdarić , who had only replaced him in summer 2014. On October 17, 2016 he took over as successor to Dieter Hecking, initially provisionally, then finally the first team of VfL Wolfsburg from November 6, 2016 and received a contract that ran until June 30, 2018. However, on February 26, 2017, VfL Wolfsburg separated from Ismaël.

From May to August 2018 Ismaël was under contract as the successor to Georgios Parachos with the Athens first division club Apollon Smyrnis . He left the club after being threatened by the club president.

For the 2019/20 season , Ismaël took over the Austrian Bundesliga club LASK as the successor to Oliver Glasner . With the LASK he finished fourth and in the UEFA Europa League they reached the round of 16. After the 2019/20 season, he was replaced by Dominik Thalhammer .
