The sports community Sonnenhof Großaspach e. V. is a football club with around 850 members from Aspach, Württemberg , created in 1994 through the merger of the football departments of two local clubs . The club colors are red and black.

The club became known through its first soccer team, which played in the 3rd division from 2014 to 2020 . In the 2020/21 season, the club will play in the fourth-class Regionalliga Südwest. In the meantime, SG Sonnenhof Großaspach only has one soccer department: due to the sporting success of soccer players, the gymnastics , table tennis and bowling departments were spun off in summer 2010 and founded their own clubs.

Since the merger, the home of the club has been the Fautenhau sports park. In 2011 a stadium with a capacity of 10,001 spectators was opened there, which is currently sponsored by WIRmachenDRUCK Arena and where the club's first soccer team plays its home games.

history

SpVgg Großaspach

In 1920 the Grossaspach gymnastics club was founded. From this, in turn, due to a different political orientation, the Workers' Gymnastics Association in Großaspach split off. In the following period, a cycling department was founded in the Grossaspach gymnastics club and the soccer department was established on March 1, 1936.

After the end of the war, the Workers' Gymnastics Federation Großaspach was merged with the Großaspach gymnastics club on July 6, 1946 and acted immediately as the Großaspach sports club . In the 1954/55 season, the footballers were promoted to the A-class Rems-Murr for the first time. Then things went downhill in sporting terms, which ultimately led to relegation to the C-Class in the 1962/63 season. In 1974 it was again promoted to the A-Class. In the following years SpVgg Großaspach became the elevator team between the district league and the district league A. From the 1982/83 season until the merger with FC Sonnenhof Kleinaspach , the sports association then played continuously in the district league A.

FC Sonnenhof Kleinaspach

The further roots of today's SG Sonnenhof Großaspach go back to a regular table team around Uli Ferber, the then junior manager of the Kleinaspacher Hotel Sonnenhof , which existed from 1976 . In 1982 the members of the bar team finally founded the club FC Sonnenhof Kleinaspach , which from then on played in the leisure league organized by the Württemberg football association . The hobby footballers were able to strengthen themselves increasingly with players experienced in the state and association leagues, who previously mostly worked for FC Viktoria Backnang . In the following years, the FC Sonnenhof began to dominate the Württemberg recreational football. The first major successes were achieved in the 1986/87 season. The team was Wuerttemberg champions both indoors and on the field and also won the WFV Cup for leisure teams.

From the 1987/88 season onwards, Kleinaspach registered for regular game operations for the Württemberg Football Association. The game was played on the sports field of TSV Bad Rietenau . In the first season, the team around player-coach Görge Kalb finished fourth. In the next season they became champions and made it to the district league A. FC Sonnenhof Kleinaspach, for which Ralf Rangnick, who lived in Backnang, played a few games at the time, made it to the district league in the 1990/91 season.

From 1991 to 1994 FC Sonnenhof belonged to the district league Rems / Murr. In the 1992/93 season they became district league champions with coach Görge Kalb. Due to the reduction of the national league from 18 to 16 teams, only three champions from the four districts of Hohenlohe, Unterland, Enz / Murr and Rems / Murr could advance. Kleinaspach initially failed in the qualifying games with 1: 1 and 1: 2 after extra time at TSV Merklingen . In the playoffs for the third promotion place you met SV Schluchtern , who had lost in the first relegation round to TSV Crailsheim . Again, the Aspacher reached a draw in the away game. But the 3: 3 from the first leg was not enough. With the 1: 2 home defeat in front of 1,200 spectators in Rietenau, FC Sonnenhof missed promotion to the regional league. This finally succeeded in the following season. After the preliminary round was disappointing, the new trainer Herbert Bentz had to leave shortly before the winter break. He was replaced by his predecessor Görge Kalb, with whom the championship of the district league and the associated promotion to the Württemberg state league was achieved. The successful coach looked after the new national division until 1998.

The SG Sonnenhof Großaspach results from the merger of the FC Sonnenhof Kleinaspach with the SpVgg Großaspach . The two clubs had held initial talks about a merger as early as 1993, the long-term goal of which was an FC Aspach , which was originally to include TSV Bad Rietenau and SpVgg Kleinaspach / Allmersbach . On August 25, 1994, however, only the football departments of the game association and FC Sonnenhof merged. The newly founded association, whose first chairman was Uli Ferber, had 161 members. Because the founding meeting took place after the registration deadline for the Württemberg Football Association, the teams continued to play under the old name in the first season: in the regional league of FC Sonnenhof Kleinaspach I, in regional league A in Spvgg Großaspach and in regional league B in FC Sonnenhof Kleinaspach II .

With the merger, the footballers of FC Sonnenhof were able to leave the sports field previously used by TSV Bad Rietenau and use the Großaspacher Sportpark Fautenhau from now on . This was fundamentally modernized and expanded over the next 18 months. In addition to the existing forest sports field with the clubhouse, there was an artificial turf pitch and the “Canadian Log House”, which housed new changing rooms, sanitary facilities and the office. In terms of sport, the first team was immediately one of the top teams in the regional league. Already in the first year they finished fourth in the table. In the six years that followed, the Aspacher faced several times before the state league title and promoted to the Württemberg Association ; In 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2001 they became runner-up. It was particularly close in the 1998/99 season when they were tied with champions SGV Freiberg at the end and were left behind because of the worse goal difference. Under coach Jürgen Rapolder the time had finally come in the 2001/02 round: SG Sonnenhof Großaspach and TSV Schwieberdingen were close together at the top of the table over the entire season with a clear gap to the other teams. With a 2-0 win in the local derby at TSG Backnang , the championship was achieved on June 1, 2002 and thus promotion to the association league. In the end, SG Sonnenhof had two points ahead of second-placed TSV Schwieberdingen.

SG Sonnenhof Großaspach started their first league season with a 0-1 home defeat against VfR Heilbronn on August 11, 2002. After further defeats, the first win followed on the fourth match day at 2-1 at TSF Ditzingen . The team soon found their way in the new division. At the end of the season, the SG finished eighth in the secured midfield, a placement that was repeated the following year. In the 2004/05 season Großaspach settled under the returning coach Herbert Bentz in the top third of the table. After the team was in third place at the winter break, they moved up to first place in the second half of the season after 14 games without defeat and were five points ahead of runner-up TSG Balingen in the final table . With the association league championship and promotion to the fourth-class Oberliga Baden-Württemberg , the greatest success in the club's history was achieved.

In the first two league years, the SG played against relegation, but was able to hold the class. In the 2005/06 season Großaspach took 14th place, in 2006/07 they came in thirteenth.

The 2007/08 league season was particularly turbulent in the preliminary round. Under the new coach Markus Gisdol , SG Sonnenhof was at the top of the table for the first time in the club's history in the major league after seven match days. After Gisdol's demand that the club should separate from the players Hakan Atik , David Montero and Manuel Wengert, was not met by those responsible for Aspacher, he resigned on November 19, 2007. In the meantime, Maurizio Gaudino led a training session before Hans-Jürgen Boysen took over for the rest of the year and the team was tenth after one win and three defeats. During the winter break, top performers such as the previous team captain Benjamin Gorka, Hakan Atik and striker Gino Russo left the club. On January 13, 2008, Thomas Letsch took over the team. Under him, the performances became more constant again: Großaspach remained unbeaten for six games in a row and defeated Waldhof Mannheim, who later rose to the regional league, 1-0 in front of 1,150 spectators at the Fautenhau sports park. Until the end of the season, the SG stayed in tenth place.

The upswing continued in the 2008/09 season. After a positive season, SG Sonnenhof Großaspach secured the autumn championship in the Oberliga Baden-Württemberg with an 8-0 win over VfR Mannheim one day before the winter break . The team did not give up the lead in the second half of the season either. With the 4-0 win over Offenburger FV two game days before the end, the Oberliga championship and the associated promotion to the Regionalliga Süd were made perfect. Thomas Letsch's team also won the WFV Cup : Großaspach won 1-0 against SpVgg 07 Ludwigsburg with a goal from Nicolo Mazzola in the final minute. The SG took part in the first round of the 2009/10 DFB Cup , in which they lost 4-1 to VfB Stuttgart after leading 1-0 at half-time.

On July 1, 2009, the former Bundesliga professional Jürgen Hartmann took over the SG coaching position; he was released on April 14, 2010. His successor was temporarily player-coach Rüdiger Rehm . On May 20, the coach of the second team, Norbert Gundelsweiler, was hired as interim coach until the end of the season and Alexander Zorniger from the 2010/11 season. After he moved to RB Leipzig for the 2012/13 season , Rüdiger Rehm took over as head coach.

In the 2013/14 season , SGS Großaspach became champions of the Regionalliga Südwest. The club then prevailed in the promotion games to the 3rd division against the second team of VfL Wolfsburg after a 0-0 first leg in the second leg on June 1, 2014 thanks to a goal by Sahr Senesie with a 1-0 away win.

On October 28, 2014, head coach Rüdiger Rehm left his post until the end of the season in order to concentrate on the DFB's football teacher training course and was represented by Uwe Rapolder . After a disappointing start in the second half of the season, Rapolder resigned on February 25, 2015 and Rehm took over the coaching position again early. Großaspach finished the season in 15th place.

For the 2015/16 season, the SG's second team - playing in the regional league - was canceled. This step was justified by the fact that in future youth support should be intensified and the dual system should be strengthened.

In their second third division season 2015/16 , the SGS secured the runner-up autumn championship and wintered in second place in the table. The excellent series could not be repeated in the second half of the season. But because you regularly scored in foreign stadiums, the weakness at home was evened out a little. In 2016 they stayed in the home stadium without a win and the competition overtook the Großaspacher Elf. On the last matchday at Master Dynamo Dresden , the surprise with the 4th place and the associated qualification for the DFB Cup could have been successful; in the final minutes, however, they gave up the 1-0 lead and lost 1: 2. For the 2016/17 season there was a change in the head coach position. Oliver Zapel inherited Rüdiger Rehm, who after eight years as a player and (co-) coach left the club to Bielefeld to join Arminia in the 2nd Bundesliga. The first post-Rehm season was finished in 10th place after a renewed involvement in the upper table regions. Coach Zapel left the club after his first year and was replaced by Sascha Hildmann .

On the 35th matchday of the third division season 2019/20, after the 1: 2 against SV Meppen, relegation to the fourth-class Regionalliga Südwest was certain.

Stadium and infrastructure

The new stadium in 2012

FC Sonnenhof Kleinaspach initially played on the sports field of the gymnastics and sports club in Bad Rietenau, a suburb of Aspach , due to the lack of their own playing field . After the merger of FC Sonnenhof with SpVgg Großaspach to form the new sports community, the Sportpark Fautenhau previously used by SpVgg became the home of the merged club.

The Fautenhau sports park is located outside Großaspach and was fundamentally expanded and modernized in 1994. The natural stadium, which officially seats around 3,500 spectators, was the main square of the sports park at the time, and is largely at ground level. On one long side and behind the gate there is a small slope for the spectators. In friendly matches against Bundesliga clubs FC Schalke 04 , Bayer 04 Leverkusen , TSV 1860 Munich or VfB Stuttgart , over 5,000 visitors were counted. There was an artificial turf pitch right next to the stadium.

At the natural stadium there is also the club house and the Canadian log house, also built in 1994, in the substructure of which there are changing and sanitary rooms, youth and referee rooms as well as the SG Sonnenhof Großaspach office.

Since the facility did not meet the requirements of the German Football Association for stadiums in the regional league, the Fautenhau sports park has been rebuilt since summer 2009 and made suitable for regional leagues. The new stadium with a capacity of 10,000 spectators was built on the previous artificial turf pitch, which was lowered by 1.50 meters. The square was equipped with four grandstands and floodlights. In addition, a path was created around the sports grounds so that guest fans can get in and out of the stadium separately from the rest of the spectators in accordance with the regulations for regional league venues. At the same time, the previous main playing field was turned into an artificial turf pitch, on which the youth team's games are now played.

During the renovation phase, which was completed in summer 2011, SG Sonnenhof Großaspach played its regional league games for two years in the Heilbronn Frankenstadion . The DFB Cup game in the first round of the DFB Cup 2009/10 against VfB Stuttgart (1: 4) also took place in Heilbronn in front of 15,000 spectators. In the 2011/12 season the SG returned to Fautenhau.

The new building was opened in 2011 under the sponsor name comtech Arena , after three years it was named the mechatronic arena . The venue has been called WIRmachenDRUCK Arena since January 2020 .
