TuS Rot-Weiß Koblenz (officially: Turn- und Sportfreunde Rot-Weiß Koblenz eV ) is a sports club from Koblenz . The athletics department produced numerous German champions in the 1940s and 1950s. The first men's soccer team was promoted to the Regionalliga Südwest in 2019 and qualified once for the DFB Cup . The first women's soccer team played in the Regionalliga Südwest for three years .
history
The club was founded on June 14, 1947, when the Koblenz TSC, founded in 1860, merged with TG Koblenz and VfL 06/07 Koblenz . Originally the newly founded association was called Sportfreunde Rot-Weiß Koblenz . The use of the word gymnastics in the club name has been banned by the French military government . It was not until March 1951 that the association took its current name.
Today the association has over 2,000 members in the following departments: badminton , disabled sports , boules , boxing , fistball , soccer , hockey , judo , karate , kendo , athletics , rehab sports , preventive sports , roller art skating , skiing , table tennis , gymnastics , club youth and volleyball .
athletics
Especially in the period after the Second World War , Rot-Weiß Koblenz provided numerous German champions in athletics. Bert Steines took part in the Summer Olympics in Melbourne in 1956 . The following athletes became German athletics champions:
- Hubert Huppertz : 1949, 1950 in the 400-meter run
- Karl Kohlhoff : 1950, 1951, 1952 in the 400 meter hurdles
- Herbert Koschel : 1952, 1953, 1954 throwing a javelin
- Hanfried Oertel : 1950, 1952 in the pole vault
- Karl-Heinz Schmalz : 1954 in the 3000 meter obstacle course
- Bert Steines : 1951, 1953, 1954, 1955, 1956 in the 200-meter hurdles
- Günther Steines : 1950, 1952 in the 800 meter run
In addition, the 4 x 400 meter relay was German champions in 1950 and 1954. The following Koblenz German athletics champions were held in the hall:
- Horst Drum : 1957 in the pole vault
- Herman Lingnau : 1959, 1960, 1961 in the shot put
- Kurt-Walter May : 1974 in all-around competition
- Bert Steines: 1954, 1955, 1956, 1958 in the hurdles
Soccer
For decades, the footballers from Rot-Weiß Koblenz only played at the local level. In 2011, Rot-Weiß became champion of the district league center and made it to the sixth class Rhineland league . There the Koblenz team came third in 2012 and 2014, before the team was able to secure the championship and promotion to the Oberliga Rheinland-Pfalz / Saar in 2016. Two years later, the Red-Whites won the Rhineland Cup for the first time with a 1-0 victory over TuS Koblenz . This qualified the club for the 2018/19 DFB Cup . In the 2018/19 season , Rot-Weiß Koblenz won the championship in the Oberliga Rheinland-Pfalz / Saar and was promoted to the Regionalliga Südwest . There he finished last or 18th place in the final table of the 2019/20 season . However, since the season was declared prematurely ended due to the COVID-19 pandemic , no team had to be relegated from the regional league due to the special circumstances.
The women's team played from 1997 to 2000 in the then second-rate Regionalliga Südwest. Then the team played in the Rhineland League until 2007, before the team relegated to the district league. In 2016, Red-White also rose from the district league.
The home ground was the artificial turf next to the Oberwerth stadium until July 2018 . Since TuS Koblenz was relegated to the Oberliga Rheinland-Pfalz / Saar, the two clubs have shared their home stadium. Former professional players like Jan Hawel and Sören Klappert play for Rot-Weiß Koblenz . Globetrotter Rudi Gutendorf trained the red and whites in the 1950s.
Boxing
The boxing department of Rot-Weiß Koblenz produced two later professional boxers: Alpaslan Agüzüm and Bernd Friedrich .
