The football club Bayern Alzenau 1920 eV ( FC Bayern Alzenau ) is a Bavarian football club from Alzenau in Lower Franconia and, by contrast, belongs to the Hessian Football Association .
history
The club was founded in 1920 as a football department in the Alzenau gymnastics and sports club. After differences of opinion between the gymnastics club and the South German Football Association , the football department was dissolved and founded in the spring of 1924 as an independent football club Bayern Alzenau.
Since 1983, the club played mostly in the regional league (first Bavaria North, later Hesse South). The change from the Bavarian to the Hessian league since the 1992/93 season is due to the geographical proximity to Hesse . Many opposing teams in the higher Hessian leagues are based in the Rhine-Main area , to which Alzenau also belongs. However, the E and F youth teams still take part in the games of the Bavarian Football Association.
With the promotion to the Oberliga Hessen after two relegation games , the biggest sporting success in the club's history to date was achieved in 2005. Bayern Alzenau is the second Bavarian team after Viktoria Aschaffenburg to play in the Oberliga Hessen. In the 2008/09 season, Bayern Alzenau was the only Bavarian representative in what is now the Hessenliga, the highest Hessian football league. As runner-up in the Hessenliga in 2008/09, FC Bayern Alzenau was promoted to the Regionalliga Süd , as the first-placed SC Waldgirmes waived the promotion for financial and organizational reasons. After only one year, however, Alzenau rose from bottom of the table back in the Hessen League. In the 2010/11 season, the team succeeded in winning the title in the Hessenliga and thus being promoted back to the regional league. For the following season, the former Bundesliga professional Jochen Seitz was signed up .
After the 2015/16 season, in which the club narrowly escaped relegation, Seitz announced his resignation. Angelo Barletta was signed as the new coach for the 2016/17 season .
In the 2018/19 season, the club finished second behind FC Gießen and was thus allowed to take part in the promotion games to the Regionalliga Südwest . There the club was able to prevail against SV Röchling Völklingen and the Stuttgarter Kickers thanks to the most away goals scored after all three matches between the clubs had ended in a draw.
