history
The league was named "1. Amateur League Rhineland ”for the 1952/53 season. At that time it represented the substructure for the 2nd Southwest League and was thus third-class in the overall league hierarchy. From the 1956/57 season to 1962/63 the league played in two seasons East and West with mostly 12 teams per season. The Rhineland champion was determined between the two relay winners. With the introduction of the Regionalliga Südwest as the second highest division from the 1963/64 season, the 1st Rhineland amateur league was again combined in one season. From the 1974/75 season, the league acted as a substructure for the newly introduced 2nd Bundesliga , with the Rhineland champions ascertaining a promotion to the southern season of the 2nd Bundesliga against the champions of the Association League Southwest and the Association League Saar in a promotion round. From the 1978/79 season, the Oberliga Südwest was (re) introduced as the highest amateur league (from the 2012/13 season referred to as Oberliga Rheinland-Pfalz / Saar). The league was renamed “Verbandsliga Rheinland” and has only been fourth class since then. The master rose in each case to the league. With the reintroduction of the third-class regional leagues for the 1994/95 season, the Rhineland Association League, which received its current name "Rhineland League" from the 2003/04 season, only made the fifth highest division and after the introduction of the 3rd league from the 2008/09 season even only still represents the sixth highest level in German league football.
