The VfL Hamm (officially: Verein für Leibesübungen von 1883 Hamm eV ) is a sports club from Hamm (Sieg) in the Altenkirchen district (Westerwald) . The first soccer team played for 19 years in the then third and fourth class Oberliga Südwest and took part in the DFB Cup four times .
history
TV Hamm was founded on August 15, 1883 . With the joining of FC Einigkeit Hamm , founded in 1916, TV Hamm received a football department, which in 1923 became independent as Sportfreunde Hamm as part of the clean divorce . On November 30, 1935, Sportfreunde merged with TV Hamm to form VfL Hamm .
Between 1957 and 1962 VfL played in the 2nd amateur league Rhineland , but in 1966 slipped down to the 1st district class. In the 1970s, VfL experienced a sporting boom. In 1978 the hammer rose to the Association League Rhineland . Four years later, they made the leap into the then third-class Oberliga Südwest, from which VfL was relegated again. The return to the league succeeded in 1985 when the hammer were one point ahead of the TuS Koblenz Association League champions . There the team was able to establish itself quickly and reached third place in the 1986/87 season . In the following years, VfL only achieved midfield placements. In 1993 the relegation was only achieved through the better goal difference against SV Viktoria Herxheim .
A year later, the hammer missed the re-established regional league . At the end of the 1990s, the team improved in the table and could celebrate the runner-up in 2000 and 2001 respectively. Two years later, VfL rose from the league. In 2006 the hammer had to leave the Rheinliga down. In the following season, the club could not provide a team and continued in the district league A. After two relegations in a row, VfL fell into the district league C. After two ascents in a row, VfL started in 2011 in the district league A Westerwald / Sieg and two years later made it to the district league East .
In 1986, 1987, 1999 and 2000, VfL won the Rhineland Cup and thus qualified for the DFB Cup. When they first appeared in the 1986/87 season , the team only had to admit defeat to FC Gütersloh on penalties in the replay . A year later there was a 2: 7 defeat against KSV Hessen Kassel . In the third appearance , VfL failed 4-0 to the Stuttgarter Kickers , while the Hammer lost 6-0 to Energie Cottbus a year later .
