Oberliga Südwest 1985/86
2nd Bundesliga 1986/87

The Oberliga Südwest 1986/87 was the ninth season of the third-class league.

The Eintracht Trier was champion and qualified for the promotion round to 2. Bundesliga , but where they failed in the southern group narrowest of margins one point back to a promotion place. Wormatia Worms took part in the German amateur championship final, but was eliminated in the preliminary round. The clubs FK Clausen , the ASC Dudweiler , the promoted SV Edenkoben and the SpVgg Elversberg relegated to the association leagues . The Clausener failed only because of the poorer goal difference against SV Leiwen. They are only relegated at all because FVS Salmrohr, who had no chance in the 2nd Bundesliga, relegated a relegated team to the Oberliga Südwest and thus four teams had to relegate. In return, SV Hasborn (Saar) , Viktoria Herxheim (Southwest) and SpVgg EGC Wirges (Rhineland) rose as the respective association league champions in the following season.
