geography

Geographical location and landscape

Überherrn is located in the southwest of the Saarland, right on the border with France (about 40 kilometers to Metz ; the neighboring community on the French side is Creutzwald ) at an altitude of 192–377 meters. In the south of the municipality lies the extensive forest area of the Warndt , in the north-west of the Saargau ridge with its foothills of the Lorraine hill country. In the east is the wide Saar basin .

The beautifully situated landscape is predominantly forested. Agricultural areas are located in the lowlands and in the immediate vicinity of the villages. Characteristic elements of the landscape are sand pits that have been left open, although some of them have been recultivated as usable areas. In places, village structures and structures on the edge of the village, such as orchards, open floodplains and old walls, have been preserved. A large part of the landscape, in particular the extensive forest area of the Warndt , is also designated as a priority area for species and biotope protection.

history

Finds show that the area was already inhabited in the Stone and Iron Ages . Other finds come from Roman times (see Roman excavations in Saarland ). The first documentary mention of Überherrn comes from the year 1293 ( De Villa Bista deed ), in which a certain Wilhelm Armiger and his wife Odilia affirmed that they have no legal claims against people in the villages of Bisten, Oberbisten, Überherrn etc. In the early Middle Ages , Überherrn belonged to the County of Saarbrücken , the remaining districts of Bisten, Berus, Altforweiler and Felsberg belonged to the Duchy of Lorraine . The ruins of the Teufelsburg are still preserved from this time . In the 16th century, the county of Saarbrücken also fell to the Duchy of Lorraine.

Louis XV, King of France and Navarre, painted by Louis-Michel van Loo, elevated the Überherrn to a barony in 1767

According to the agreements of the Vienna Preliminary Peace Treaty between France and Austria of October 3, 1735, Lorraine fell to France in 1766 after the death of the Polish king in exile Stanislaus I. Leszczyński , to whom the Duchy of Lorraine was ceded. In the Treaty of Bockenheim between the Kingdom of France and the County of Nassau-Saarbrücken of February 15, 1766, Überherrn and the Linslerhof are expressly listed as areas ceded to France.

Louis XV elevated the overlord, now part of the Kingdom of France, to a barony through Lettres Patentes du Roi du mois Octobre 1767 . The first Baron von Überherrn was the military doctor of the French king, François-Marie-Claude Richard. Baron Richard was born in Obersierck, an annex of the parish Kerlingen on the Upper Moselle, in 1712, studied medicine and appeared in 1743 as Docteur en médecine et Médecin du Roi à l'hôpital militaire et ville de Sarrelouis . As a military doctor in the fortress town of Saarlouis, he had King Louis XV, who was in Metz, in 1744. cured of its peeling disease. For his medical services he received from the daughters of Louis XV. probably in May 1774 the painting St. John the Baptist by Pierre Mignard .

The municipality was assigned to the canton of Saarlouis until 1815 , in the Moselle department .

After the turmoil of the French Revolution and the defeat of Napoleon , Überherrn went to Prussia after the Second Peace of Paris in 1815 (Überherrn as the "most south-westerly corner of Prussia"), the newly established Saarlouis district was assigned to the Trier administrative district . From 1870/1871 ( Franco-Prussian War ), all Überherrner localities belonged to the German Empire - as did the realm of Alsace-Lorraine, which was annexed by Germany at that time .

After the First World War , Überherrn and the entire Saar area were placed under the administration of the League of Nations - until the referendum in 1935 , in which the residents of the Saar area decided to join Germany. For Überherrn, the consequences of the Second World War brought another repetition of the history of the border region: the annexation was followed by the occupation, the occupation was followed by a Saarland-autonomous transition period , and finally another referendum in which the Saarlanders decided to belong to the Federal Republic of Germany in 1955.

As part of the regional and administrative reform in Saarland , the five previously independent communities of Altforweiler , Berus , Bisten , Felsberg and Überherrn were merged into a new community under the name Überherrn on January 1, 1974 . In 1979 Wohnstadt became a separate district.

The community colors are yellow - red.

The Überherrner coat of arms has four fields, which reflect the eventful history of the municipality: From the point of view of the wearer, the red sloping bar from Lorraine with the three silver Alerions on a golden background; top left the golden lion of the County of Nassau - Saarbrücken on a blue background; below right the three golden lilies of the French kings on a blue background; lower left a red wagon wheel on a gold background with six spokes for the six districts, at the same time a symbol for the rural character of the community and its importance as a border crossing. The wave cut, which separates the upper from the lower fields, stands for the location on the river Bist which formerly formed the border between the Duchy of Lorraine and the County of Nassau-Saarbrücken.
