About this picture

Under Wadgassen is both the Saarland municipality in the district of Saarlouis , about 15 kilometers west of Saarbrücken to understand and the community town of Wadgassen itself. For a better distinction, the wording Wadgassen (place) is also used in correspondence when it comes to the community part.

geography

Wadgassen is located in the valley of the Bist , a left tributary of the Saar , on the northern edge of the Warndt region and thus in the southwestern part of the Saarland . The closest cities are Saarlouis in approx. 7.7 km and Völklingen in 6 km away. The community is traversed by the Bist, which flows into the Saar at Hostenbach. The Rotsolig spring in Wadgassen (place), which over the Ellbach u. a. the Wadgasser natural swimming pool is supplied with water.

Districts with population (as of January 1, 2017)

history

In the past, Wadgassen had a whole series of names that cannot be reduced to obvious forms such as Wadgaßen or Wadgass. Some of the documented names are: Villa Wuadegozzinga and Wadegozzinga, Vallis Goziensis, Wadegassen, (de) Wadgozen, Wadegocenges, Wadegoyzen, Wadegozinga, Wadegozhingen, Wadegozzinga, Wategozingen, Watlegozinga.

Early days

Several archaeological finds in Differten and Friedrichweiler indicate that the area was already inhabited in the Stone Age . In addition to a Celtic burial mound , excavations in Differten revealed evidence of settlement from Roman times . In addition to a few finds that indicate a small vicus , these are limited to verifiable cross-connecting roads to the routes Divodurum - Vicus Saravus - Mogontiacum and Augusta Treverorum - Contiomagus - Vicus Saravus. A special find was the very well-preserved sandstone slab of Merkur von Differten , which was discovered when the old local church was demolished in 1893 and depicts the god Mercury with a herald's staff. The Gallo-Roman representation is an important indication of the continuous settlement also in the Roman era. A copy of the plate is in the Merkurstube in the Bisttalhalle in Differten.

Royal court and abbey

The first documented finds show the area of today's large community of Wadgassen as a Franconian royal court , which was probably created after the migration period. In the year 902 Wadgassen, known as Villa Wuadegozzinga , is the residence of the Carolingian king Ludwig the child , who issued a certificate here. The first documentary mentions of the other parts of the community are made much later. The oldest document from 1067 mentions Differten. The places Werbeln , Hostenbach and Schaffhausen are first mentioned in a document much later in the years 1214, 1225 and 1325. Friedrichweiler's founding document actually dates from 1725.

In 1080 the royal court came into the possession of Sigbert I , the count of the lower Saargau, through a gift from King Heinrich IV . Sigbert's son, Count Friedrich von Saarbrücken , determined in a will the court with all associated possessions to found an Augustinian canon monastery . Archbishop Albero von Trier founded a Premonstratensian monastery in 1135 in what is now Wadgassen , the first abbot of which was Canon Wolfram, who was appointed from the Prémontré Abbey .

Catchment area of the abbey and Rodener Sprengel

In the centuries that followed, up to its dissolution in 1792, the Wadgassen Abbey developed through the work of the Premonstratensian Canons, through foundations and donations, into a spiritual and cultural center in the central Saar with large free float and extensive rule. Its core area was Wadgassen, that is, the actual abbey with the Oberhof and the Spurk, the Hostenbach dairy with the towns of Hostenbach, Schaffhausen and the village of Werbeln. At the beginning of the French Revolution, Differten was half owned by the abbey, in Friedrichweiler it only owned properties. Today's Roden district of the district town of Saarlouis also belonged to the Wadgasser Abbey for a few decades. From 1687 to 1721 the Benedictine Abbey of Tholey transferred its chartered rights to the Rodener Sprengel to the Wadgasser Abbey. Failure to comply with the agreements led to a lawsuit by Tholey Abbey in Trier, which ultimately restored the old property rights.

The fact that members of the Bruch family, as owners of the Saarland brewery GA Bruch of the same name, have been provosts of the Wadgasser Abbey for three generations , in which beer had been brewed since the beginning of the 16th century, led to the creation of the Wadgasser Klosterbräu in 2011 In view of the past and the original recipe that is no longer available, this beer has more of a local marketing meaning.

Cristallerie

In 1843 Nicolas Villeroy , Jean-François Boch and Eduard Karcher founded the Cristallerie Wadgassen, the first director of which was Eugen von Boch. The Cristallerie dominated the Wadgasser industry until the middle of the 20th century, which can be seen in many everyday details, including the name of the carnival club "Glasspatzen". However, the V&B Cristallerie was not the first company to manufacture glass here. As early as 1680 there was a small glass factory of the abbey in Wadgassen-Werbeln. The last glass production took place in 1986. The area of the old storage rooms and the kilns in the main building were converted in the 1990s by the summer theater. The New York Story (1996), The Heart Timeless (1997), the Cabaret (1998), The Man of La Mancha (1999) were performed there. The summer theater was closed in 2000 for cost reasons.

Large municipality / municipality

On January 1, 1974, the municipalities of Differten , Hostenbach , Schaffhausen and Werbeln , which were part of the Wadgassen office, were incorporated into the municipality of Wadgassen as part of the regional and administrative reform in Saarland, creating the larger municipality of Wadgassen . The (self) designation of the Wadgassen community is often found in publications. Until the introduction of the uniform five-digit postcode system in 1993, the postcode was 6633, then 66787.

Remunicipalisation

Since the end of the 1990s and increasingly from 2000 onwards, the municipality has endeavored to remunicipalise various areas of disposal and supply. It realizes this through the Wadgassen GmbH pool, which is linked to the community, and the disposal company. The Bäderbetrieb Wadgassen GmbH established the Gemeindewerke Wadgassen GmbH as a subsidiary, which in turn established the GemeindeStrom Wadgassen GmbH. The Bäderbetrieb Wadgassen GmbH is responsible for the administration of the indoor swimming pool and the sauna in Differten as well as the outdoor swimming pool in Wadgassen (place). Gemeindewerke Wadgassen GmbH acts as operator and in sales in the area of water supply , in the area of wastewater only as a factor, in the area of electricity as network operator and in the area of gas network as lessor. The GemeindeStrom Wadgassen GmbH is solely responsible for selling the electricity.

Sovereign tasks such as sewage and waste disposal are combined in the disposal company. After the EVS exit, the community also offers garbage collection itself and maintains its own, still provisional recycling center in Bahnhofstrasse in Wadgassen (town).

Coat of arms of the municipality

The coat of arms was approved on July 15, 1976 by the Saarland Ministry of the Interior.

Blazon : "Above a lowered, curly blue tip, inside a golden heraldic lily, split by gold and red, in front a half, red-armored black eagle at the crack, behind a continuous golden cross."

The colors of the parish are red - yellow.

The importance of the royal court and the abbey for the origin and development of the municipality of Wadgassen is documented in the new municipal coat of arms through the inclusion of the royal eagle and the cross as symbols that are common to all districts. The lily symbolizes the time of Lorraine and French sovereignty and the colors blue - gold, which were also the colors of the French royal family, can also be found in the coat of arms of the Saarbrücken county in Nassau-Saarbrücken . The eagle as the coat of arms of the German kings appears for the first time in the twelfth century towards the end of the reign of Frederick I Barbarossa . As a ruler symbol on royal insignia or royal garb, it is older. As a royal game, it also appears with the kings and emperors from the Salian house , under whose reign in 1080 the royal court of Wadgassen was donated to the counts in Saargau. Due to the representation of the common figure and the structural reform of 1974, the eagle can be understood as a symbol for the Federal Republic of Germany.

Coat of arms of the district

The place of Wadgassen has a completely different coat of arms than the municipality of the same name:

Coat of arms of the place Wadgassen
Blazon : "In red under two slantingly crossed, shortened silver abbot bars, a silver glass melting furnace with three golden furnace openings from which golden flames beat."
Foundation of the coat of arms: The abbot staffs symbolize the founding of the place and the existence of the Premonstratensian Abbey of Wadgassen from the 11th to the end of the 18th century. The crystal factory operated by Villeroy & Boch on the abbey site from 1842 and its economic influence on the community is represented by the glass melting furnace.

The coat of arms was approved on July 25, 1968 by the Saarland Ministry of the Interior. The colors of the district are red and white.
