Location of Differten in Saarland

Differten is a part of the municipality of Wadgassen in the Saarlouis district ( Saarland ). Differten is located on the Bist , a left tributary of the Saar , and on the northern edge of the Warndt . The name Differten is derived from Diffurthe ( deep ford ; other spellings: Diefurt, Diffurde, Diffurte, Diffurthe, Diffurt, Diffurten and Dyffurthe), because the place is located on a ford through the Bist.

history

Based on the archaeological finds in the Differten area, z. B. Stone ax remains from the Neolithic Age , it can be proven that there were settlement structures there by people around 2500 to 2000 BC. BC gave. The first documentary mention of Differten took place in 1067 in a document from Duke Gerhardt of Lorraine to the Echternach monastery . In 1080, Differten and Wadgassen (Wadegozingen) came into the possession of Sigisbert, the progenitor of the later Counts of Saarbrücken.

Mercury statue

The deed of donation of the noblewoman "Gertrudis von Saarbrücken", in which she transferred a chapel and a larger estate to Diffurde, ie Differten, to the "Wadegozingen" abbey, is dated 1223. Archbishop Theodoric II of Trier confirmed the donation and entrusted the abbey with the pastoral care in Diffurde. This right was extended on December 17, 1292 by Archbishop Boemund von Trier, who granted the Ecclesie Wadegociensis the right to have the upper church and the chapel in Dyffurthe looked after by secular priests. The abbey in Wadgassen, which at that time was not a real place, but consisted almost exclusively of the abbey itself, significantly expanded the monastery property in Differten in 1319.

In 1620 Mr. Duhoutz built a glassworks in Differten, of which only the Glashüttenstrasse bears witness today. One last historical reference can be dated April 6, 1633.

In 1815, with the establishment of the Franco-German border, Differten became part of the Prussian state.

Differten is where the so-called Mercury von Differten was found , a Celtic-Roman image of a god from the first centuries after Christianity. This is a completely preserved sandstone slab showing the Roman god Mercury with a herald's staff. The find was discovered when the old church was demolished in 1893 and caused a sensation among experts.

On January 1, 1974, the community Differten, to which the place Friedrichweiler belonged, was incorporated into the community Wadgassen .

coat of arms

Blazon of the former municipal coat of arms: "In the silver wave head, in it three floating red common crosses, in gold an overturned blue tip, covered with a golden lily". Awarded to the then still independent community of Differten on August 10, 1967.

Leisure and culture

As usual for primary residential areas, Differten offers numerous leisure and recreational opportunities. The indoor swimming pool of the municipality of Wadgassen was built in Differten, which together with the Parkbad Wadgassen (outdoor swimming pool) is one of the municipal swimming pools . The wildlife park is also located in Differten, which is home to numerous animals from all over Europe and which is publicly owned.

In the vicinity of the Catholic parish church of St. Gangolf is also the Differter war memorial, which is one of the town's architectural monuments . In Differten there are also the monuments for mining and the iron and steel industry behind the church, the so-called worker sculptures, and at the Bisttalhalle in the form of a pulley and ironworks roller.

Due to the location of Differtens, it borders directly on the forest areas there on three sides, it is well connected to the cycling and hiking trails, local recreation areas such as the warning pond or the fish pond are only a few kilometers away. The former ammunition depot of the US military between Differten and the warning pond was cleared for the Gulf War.
