coat of arms

Wadgassen-Hostenbach coat of arms

As of 2014, Hostenbach is one of the three of the five parts of the municipality of Wadgassen that do not have their own official coat of arms. However, there are two unofficially used coat of arms designs that are also used regularly in the municipality, including in publications. They only differ in the color of the coat of arms. Mostly the variant that was shown on the community plate in the 1990s is used.

Blazon of the variant in silver-blue. “The shield in blue and silver. In the silver head of the shield is the red rose with green sepals and golden clusters. On blue in silver the teeth over the fallen pliers. ”. In a more recent version of the proposed coat of arms to be changed to: "On blue in silver the teeth over the fallen pliers, a silver ear on both sides."

Blazon of the coat of arms, which can also be found on the communal plate. “The shield in red and silver. In the red head of the shield is the silver rose with green sepals and golden clusters. On silver in black the teeth over the pliers. "

history

The oldest known written mention of the place can be found in a document from Countess Hedwig von Zweibrücken from 1225 . And the oldest full-fledged letter from Wadgassen comes from Hostenbach from January 17, 1791. The name Hosten is derived from Hausten , which comes from the dialectal Hau ( hay ). Houses were wooden frames for drying the hay. Until 1792 Hostenbach belonged to the Wadgassen Abbey . As part of the Saarland regional and administrative reform on January 1, 1974, Hostenbach was incorporated into the municipality of Wadgassen together with Differten , Schaffhausen and Werbeln .

The former pit

Coal had been dug in Hostenbach since the beginning of the 17th century. Initially, the mine was owned by the Wadgassen Abbey . Since 1725 there was a dispute with the Counts of Saarbrücken over the mining rights, which was only settled by Prince Wilhelm Heinrich in 1759 , in which the Wadgassen Abbey was allowed to keep the mining rights until its dissolution in 1790. When the abbey was dissolved, the mine became the property of the French state. In 1798, Nicolas Villeroy bought the Hostenbacher mine at auction and managed it by his brother Pierre Villeroy . In the course of the same century it was bought by Richard Vopelius from Sulzbach , who used it for his glassworks. 1815, the beginning of civil engineering on the Saar was heralded with the first civil engineering shaft with a ten-hp steam engine in Hostenbach. According to another source, these were the first civil engineering shafts (shaft construction instead of tunnel construction) in Germany.

In 1857 Carl Röchling married Alwine Vopelius . As a dowry, the couple received shares in the mine, which initially belonged mainly to the Vopelius family. Carl took over management a short time later and was sole managing director from 1899. The mine was then owned by the Röchling family from Völklingen , who used the coal for iron and steel production. At that time it was one of two privately owned mines in Saarland.

After the First World War , it was taken over by the French state and shut down in 1932.

During this time the League of Nations -Mandats over the Saar (1920-1935) was to host a Bach Domanialschule .

The Hostenbach private mine had 18 shafts, which were sunk between 1805 and 1917 at depths of 24 to 338 meters. In 1850 the concession area of the mine was still 707 hectares , in 1910 already 1069 and in 1913 even 1247.

In 1865, the Union shaft was the first civil engineering shaft to be sunk. In 1872 the Hostenbach mine was the first mine in Saarland to have a driving skill . It was installed in the Karl shaft of the Union shaft. The art of driving was in operation until 1906 and was then replaced by a cable car . In 1873 an underground narrow-gauge railway was put into operation in the pit (ibid. P. 83). In 1874, a single-track narrow-gauge railway from the Union shaft to the Saar was put into operation, and a second track was added after the coal washing plant was built in 1904. The route led along the Hostenbacher Friedhof parallel to Bachstrasse to the Saar. In 1919 there was an accident with the mine railway in which the train driver was injured so badly that he died a short time later.

Since the seams in Hostenbach were severely disturbed , dismantling was time-consuming and the economic situation of the mine was precarious (ibid. P. 70).

In the years 1925–1927, an average of between 12,000 and 18,000 tons of coal were mined each month with a workforce of between 600 and 1000 employees. At that time the Union , Karl , Werbeln , Barbara and Lorely pits were in operation.

Today only the spoil heaps of the former mine (pit dump ) remind of the long history of mining in Hostenbach. In the late 1960s and early 1970s there was also a processing plant there (in the extension of Puhlstrasse) that processed the overburden for commercial use. The facility was shut down in the 1970s and then demolished. Later the Kipp served as an illegal waste dump. Today the hills are accessible by hiking trails. Petrifications can still be found there.

On the opposite side of the street in the neighboring district of Schaffhausen , the hoisting machine house of the so-called Karl shaft of the Hostenbach mine, which dates from 1870, is still located today. Today it is a listed building.

The former sheet rolling mill

In 1893 the construction of the hot rolling mill in Hostenbach began by Rudolf Weber , an industrialist from Siegerland. Production started in 1895. Initially, semi-finished products from smelting works in Lorraine were processed, later the steel from the specially built Siemens-Martin steelworks with four furnaces was rolled. In 1912 Weber sold his factory to Burbacher Hütte , which belonged to ARBED . The new owner redesigned the plant and was able to increase production from 3000 to 8000 tons of sheet metal per month. After the steelworks closed in 1924, steel from Burbach was processed. In the years 1943 until the evacuation in October 1944, the sheet rolling mill was assigned a forced labor camp for around 50 Soviet deportees. Considerable parts of the plant were destroyed during the war, so that production could not be resumed until 1948. In the 1950s around 100,000 tons of sheet metal were rolled annually with a workforce of around 350. In 1972 the plant was closed due to outdated production technology and a lack of raw steel capacities .

The village

Some cultural events such as the annual village festival take place in the market square. The center of the village community is the multi-purpose hall Glück-auf-Halle . There is also a miners' room with mining equipment and motifs.

Sacred Heart Church

Hostenbach church with extension

In 1899 a church building association was founded in Hostenbach. The wish was to build a separate church for the growing community in order to save the long walk to Wadgassen and also to relieve the Wadgasser church. In 1914 the plans for the church were ready, but construction was postponed when the First World War broke out. In 1920 the parish of Wadgassen became independent and got its own asset management. In the years 1922–1923 the church was built according to a design by the Trier architect Peter Marx and consecrated in the name of the Herz Jesu Kirche Hostenbach . The church is modeled on a basilica . It was originally supposed to be built in the baroque style, but due to the inflation one had to be content with a more modest building. It was only enough for the main house.

Herz Jesu church with a listed steeple

The tower was added in 1954/55 and is separated from the main building. It is 45 meters high and has 5 bells. Today it is the only building in Hostenbach that is a listed building. In the 1960s, the nave was enlarged for reasons of space. The semicircular apse was expanded into a generous sanctuary with side wings.

Pointed cone heaps "Hermann and Dorothea"

Demolished hunger tower (summit on the right)

Three artificially piled up spoil heaps near Hostenbach, some of which overlap. The total deposit area is 76 ha of deposit area. The mountains are between 90 and 130 meters high. The heaps have been piled up one after the other since 1912 over several decades with inclined lifts and tipping lifts and consist of slag from the Völklingen ironworks and power plant remains . The approximately 100 m high western heap was operated from 1910 to 1931 and the northern heap from 1931 to 1952. The southern heap, which had been heaped up since 1951, lost its importance when the hut was closed. The steam that rises from the heaps testifies to this day of the great heat that still prevails inside.

The backfill took place via a 60 meter high iron tower (popularly known as the "Hunger Tower") built in 1910, which was later increased to 110 meters. The tower was the unloading station for the cable car that transported the overburden to the top of the cone to be filled.

On December 5, 1929, there was an explosion on the heap in which the earth was loosened and rolled onto the narrow-gauge locomotive that brought coal to the coal washing plant. The engine operator of the locomotive was killed. In order to avoid such accidents in the future, the concrete wall was built around the dump [Kaufmann, 2009, p. 45].

The top of the iron tower protruding from the heap was blown up in 1970 for safety reasons. For this purpose, the houses on the streets near the dump had to be temporarily evacuated. A first demolition was unsuccessful. Therefore it had to be blown up a second time. During the second blast, at least one house was damaged by iron girders.

The first dump alone consists of 4 million cubic meters of slag and rubble.

Old wall around the slag dump

The slag heaps, which are completely surrounded or fenced in by a concrete wall, are now greened by the planting of trees and bushes as part of environmental protection and landscape integration measures and offer a habitat for many plants and animals. As a secondary biotope , the area has recently been the subject of scientific studies.

The name Hermann and Dorothea was given in honor of Hermann Röchling and his wife Theodora and is an allusion to the epic poem by Goethe . The mountains are popularly known as the Hostenbach Alps .

The pointed cone heaps were shown on a stamp from the Saar area. The post assumed that the heap was overburden from the Hostenbacher mine. When the mistake was cleared up, the stamp was crushed.

traffic

railroad

  • In 1880 Hostenbach was connected to the rail network for the first time by the Völklingen – Thionville railway line. The route was continued to Bous . At the end of the Second World War , the bridge to Bous was destroyed and not rebuilt. Thus the route lost its connections with the Rossel Valley Railway to Saar Railway .
  • In 1976, passenger traffic between Saarbrücken and Hostenbach is discontinued.
  • In 2000 the closure of the Fürstenhausen to Hostenbach section is approved.
  • In 2003, the automotive logistics company Mosolf leased the Hostenbach– Überherrn section for the transport of new cars.
  • On May 13, 2010, the abandoned train station in Hostenbach was in flames and was then torn down.

Bus transport

Hostenbach is part of the Saarlouis roundabout network. Line 406 (formerly line 6) connects Saarlouis with Hostenbach. In addition, the R13 Saar-Pfalz-Bus runs from Saarbrücken via Hostenbach to Bisten . Between 1956 and 1964, the place was connected to Völklingen and Saarlouis by a trolleybus system (see Völklingen trolleybus ).

Freetime activities

Nature reserves

  • Saaraue: As part of the RheinNetz project , an area of around 5 hectares between the A620 motorway and the Saar was created as a biotope and local recreation area, thereby reactivating the Saaraue. For this purpose, the previous elevation area was lowered by 4.5 meters and opened to the Saar through two passages. This means that the area is available for flooding and makes a contribution to environmental protection. The cost of the measure amounted to 1.5 million euros.
  • Spurker Forest: Around 2 hectares of land along the A620 motorway. The protection purpose is to maintain and secure a wet meadow fallow in the transition to a pre-forest stage as well as a near-natural oak-birch-hornbeam forest.
  • Field of stump birch and field of Neuland / Lambertstros: Since 1989 it has been located northwest of the field path that leads from the residential area Wehrden-Rauenhübel (high-rise buildings) to Werbeln. Length about 220 m, width about 5 m. The purpose of protection is the preservation of field edges with old sloe hedges, tree hedges and the associated borders.

Sports

  • Weight training: Weight training is very important in Hostenbach. KSV Hostenbach has produced many nationally successful athletes.
  • Beach tennis: The "Bisttal tennis club" has its own beach tennis court. This tennis court has hosted the Saarland beach tennis championships in recent years . This sport is very popular in Hostenbach, especially among the Hostenbach youth.
