The Völklingen trolleybus was the trolleybus system of the city of Völklingen in Saarland . It existed from 1950 to 1967 and replaced the Völklingen tram that ran from 1919 to 1959 . As with the tram, the responsible transport company was Stadtwerke Völklingen (SWV). The Völklingen trolleybus was replaced by omnibuses after its closure .

history

On November 12, 1950, the gradual switch from rail to trolleybuses began. The first route was used by line 6, which connected Völklingen with the neighboring municipality of Püttlingen . It was extended on June 29, 1952 in a westerly direction via Wehrden , Hostenbach and Schaffhausen to Wadgassen , where line 5 of the Saarlouis tram also ended until 1953 . With the extension, line 6 reached a length of 11.7 kilometers.

When trolleybus line 4 from Völklingen station to Ludweiler was opened on September 29, 1954, the trolleybuses ran parallel to tram line 1 to Großrosseln as far as Rotweg , until this was also switched to trolleybuses on April 18, 1959. With this, the trolleybus service reached its greatest extent with a route length of 19.7 kilometers.

Just a few years later, the switch to buses began. The line to Wadgassen was already dieselized from 1964, the Rotweg – Ludweiler section followed in 1966. The north-south axis Püttlingen – city center – Großrosseln lasted the longest, until it was also discontinued on June 4, 1967. Today the urban buses are operated by the Völklingen transport company.

vehicles

A total of 18 trolleybuses were available for the Völklingen trolleybus. The operation was opened with ten French trolleybuses on Somua chassis, followed later by eight HS 160 OSL cars made in Germany by Henschel .
