The trolleybus Pirmasens was the trolleybus system of the Rhineland-Palatinate city of Pirmasens . The Pirmasens trolleybus existed from 1941 to 1967 and replaced the Pirmasens tram that ran between 1905 and 1943 . Both modes of transport were operated by the Pirmasens municipal utilities ; the trolleybus was replaced by omnibuses after it was closed . Today the responsible transport company is the Stadtwerke Pirmasens Verkehr GmbH .
history
The cramped traffic situation in the Pirmasens city center as well as the desire to open up the outskirts in the mountainous terrain led to the abandonment of the tram. Encouraged by the trolleybus operation in nearby Idar-Oberstein , those responsible decided to introduce the new means of transport in Pirmasens.
However, the beginning of the Second World War , which led to the first evacuation of the city, initially delayed the opening of the trolleybus. It was not until November 25, 1941, that the trolleybus service could begin from the water tower in the north of the city via the parade ground to the municipal swimming pool. The bath, now known as the Pirmasenser air and bathing park , was a short distance beyond the hospital. This 3.4 kilometer stretch was extended on April 1, 1943 in a northerly direction from the water tower to the summer forest settlement. An omnibus line had been used there since March 21, 1939.
From July 5, 1943, two days after the tram was finally shut down, trolleybuses also ran between the main train station and the parade ground. The line 1 operated from now on as the diameter line the route Central Station-Stadtbad, the line 2 resulted as a radial line from the Exerzierplatz to summer forest settlement. The air raid on August 9, 1944, which severely damaged the vehicles and overhead lines, as well as the approaching front, caused the trolleybus service to be interrupted for several years shortly after the opening.
Line 1 could not be put back into operation until October 8, 1948, and line 2 was reopened in 1949. This means that the network had again reached its maximum extension of 6.7 kilometers. Line 2 was finally converted to diesel bus operation in 1964, while electrical operation on line 1 continued until October 12, 1967.
