The Pirmasens tram was the tram system of the Rhineland-Palatinate city of Pirmasens . It operated from 1905 to 1943 and was replaced by the Pirmasens trolleybus , which existed from 1941 to 1967. Both modes of transport were operated by the Pirmasens municipal utilities , which are still responsible for bus transport in the city today.

history

The meter-gauge tram sailed from June 8, 1905 a 2.525 km long single-track line to the central station linked to the city center. There was the terminus at the hospital, where the depot was also built. Initially five, a year later another two railcars and two trailer cars were procured for operation at 7.5-minute intervals .

During the First World War , the tram was out of service from August 1, 1914 to July 5, 1919 due to a lack of personnel. Although the company survived the crisis years of the post-war period, a replacement was sought in the 1930s. Above all, the narrow streets of the city center and the desire to develop outlying districts in mountainous terrain led to the abandonment of the tram. Inspired by the trolleybus operation in Idar-Oberstein , plans were made to introduce this means of transport in Pirmasens.

However, the beginning of the Second World War, which led to the first evacuation of the city, delayed the change of mode of transport. It was not until October 15, 1941 that the tram was shortened to the connection from the main train station to the parade ground, the junction in the center of the city. On July 3, 1943, the tram finally ceased operations on the remaining section of the main train station - parade ground.
