The village of L'Hôpital was created around 1200 at the source of the Merle brook , which flows into the Rossel after a few kilometers in Merlebach . The place name is said to go back to a hospital of the Villers-Bettnach monastery , which the Counts of Saarbrücken had built in Warndt. In the Thirty Years War the place was practically wiped out. The Frenchized name of the place was first used in 1595. In 1940, L'Hôpital am Gau Westmark, district of Sankt Avold, CdZ area Lorraine was annexed. L'Hôpital was badly damaged in World War II and liberated on December 6, 1944.
