Alsting ( German Alstingen ) is a French commune with 2589 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Moselle department in the Grand Est region . It belongs to the Forbach-Boulay-Moselle arrondissement and the Forbach Porte de France community association founded in 2002 .
geography
Alsting is about 260 m above sea level, seven kilometers east of Forbach and seven kilometers south of Saarbrücken (as the crow flies). The village extends in the transition area between the Spicherer Heights in the northwest and the Saar valley in the east. In the north the community borders on the Saarland .
The northern part of the 5.73 km² community area is traversed in a west-east direction by the Simbach , a small tributary of the Saar . The Simbachtal is only 50 to 100 m wide and cut about 50 m deep into the surrounding landscape. The valley slopes are continuous on the left side of the river and partially wooded on the right. Larger forest areas can also be found on the heights in the north ( Jungswald ), in the northeast ( Buchholz ) and in the southeast ( Ermerich ). The arable and meadow land is interrupted by numerous rows of trees and hedges typical of the area.
The village itself consists of three suburbs, which are continuously built up in a northwest-southeast direction: Alsting, Hessling ( Mairie , church and school are also located here ) and Zinzing . The main settlement axis that connects all three places is the road from Stiring-Wendel to Großblittersdorf (Grosbliederstroff), which also forms part of the Saar hiking trail here.
Neighboring communities of Alsting are Saarbrücken ( Güdingen district ) in the northeast, Grosbliederstroff in the southeast, Lixing-lès-Rouhling in the south, Kerbach in the southwest, Etzling in the west and Spicheren in the northwest.
history
The municipality of Alsting (1594 Alstingen , 1797 Altzing ) has existed in its current expansion since 1790. The sources of the St. Arnual Abbey date back to 1202 for the central district of Hessling (1429 Esselange, Cecelange , 1514 Hessling , 1779 Hesseling ) .
At the beginning of the Franco-Prussian War in 1870, Alsting was also affected, because the site of the Battle of Spichern was immediately northwest of the village. During the First World War the community got off lightly, at the beginning of the Second World War most of the residents of Alsting were evacuated to Châtelaillon on the Atlantic coast and to Palinges in the south of the Burgundy region. A bombardment in Alsting in 1944 left ten dead and 17 destroyed houses.
