history

Second World War

Landroff was the scene of a short but tough battle during World War II . On November 14 and 15, 1944, the 6th US Armored Division and units of the 36th Volksgrenadier Division (87th Grenadier Regiment) of the Wehrmacht fought a battle. Units of the 68th US Tank Battalion occupied the village on November 14th. At 6 p.m. on the same day, the first of four increasingly violent and determined German counter-attacks took place. Further counter-attacks followed at 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. and finally at 1:30 a.m. on November 15.

A company of the 44th US Panzer Infantry Battalion reinforces the 68th US Tank Battalion after the second counterattack. During the last counterattack, the Wehrmacht troops reached the country road in the west of the community and during the night the Germans infiltrated the village center under cover of darkness, where the battle ended in a close-quarters battle that lasted until dawn. For his role in organizing the village's defense, Captain Daniel E. Smith, S-3 (Operations Director) of the 68th Armored Battalion, was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross . Sergeant Herbert S. Latimer of the 44th US Panzer Infantry Battalion (Company B) was also awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for “heroism and bravery in combat”. A Company of the 68th Armored Battalion was honored with the Presidential Unit Citation Award for its work in defending the village .
