Cocheren (German Kochern ) is a French commune with 3478 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) in the Moselle department in the Grand Est region (until 2016 Lorraine ). It belongs to the Forbach-Boulay-Moselle arrondissement .
geography
Cocheren is located on the Rossel , a left tributary of the Saar , between Forbach and Saint-Avold . The place is near the border with Saarland in the cross-border landscape of the Warndt . The village is dominated by the hill of the Hérapel ( colline du Hérapel , 330 m). The municipality covers 5.62 km². Cocheren owned a train station on the Forbacher Bahn .
history
There was a Celtic settlement on the Hérapel , which flourished in Gallo-Roman times. Finds from this period are in museums in Metz and Sarreguemines as well as in Germany, as the first excavations before the First World War took place under German administration (1871-1914).
