location

Varize is located on the Nied , about 20 kilometers east of Metz .

history

Varize was in 1756 in the German-speaking part of Lorraine . The place was first mentioned in 893 as Wibilis Kiricha . It has belonged to France since 1766.

On December 1, 1973, the neighboring village of Vaudoncourt ( Wieblingen ) to the west was incorporated, to which the hamlets of Plappecourt ( Peplingen ) and Léoviller ( Leoweilerhof ) belong to the south . Vaudoncourt has been French since 1769, before it was part of the Austrian exclave of Rollingen .

Varize and Vaudoncourt were temporarily again part of the German Empire from 1871 to 1918, but French remained the official and colloquial language.

After a survey of the municipality's citizens, the municipality was renamed to Varize-Vaudoncourt by an ordinance of the Prefect of the Moselle Department (arr. 2015-DCTAJ-013 of February 24, 2015) .
