The place was first mentioned in the 12th century as Walterimont and has always been on the French side of the former German-French language border . It has belonged to France since 1766.

An original stone from the Bastille has been exhibited in the town hall since 1791 , which is set into a wall.

From 1871 to 1918 Vatimont was temporarily part of the German Empire again , but French remained the official and colloquial language. At that time Vatimont had significantly more inhabitants (1910: 467 inhabitants).
