geography
Metzing is about seven kilometers west of Sarreguemines , near the border with Saarland at an altitude of 250 m above sea level in the valley of the Strichbach , which, like the Altwiesenbach in the south of the municipality, flows a few kilometers east into the Saar .
The area of the municipality of Metzing is characterized by arable and meadow land as well as orchards, only in the southwest there are smaller forests with the cross forest and the pole forest, which together cover 66 hectares.
Neighboring communities of Metzing are Nousseviller-Saint-Nabor in the north, Hundling in the east, Guebenhouse in the south and Diebling in the west.
history
The place name comes from the Latin Mutius . Via Mutzichen (1473) and Messig (1473) the spelling of the name changed to Metzing - during the time under German administration (from 1870 to 1918 and from 1940 and 1944) the village was called Metzingen .
St. Hippolytus Church
The first document that refers to Hippolytus as the patron saint of the chapel - the predecessor of today's church - is a land register entry from 1687. During this time, the village was painstakingly rebuilt after the devastating destruction of the Thirty Years' War. A chapel existed in Metzing much earlier. It belonged to the parish in Cadenbronn until 1615 and to the parish Nussweiler until 1856 (today both districts of the parish of Nousseviller-Saint-Nabor ).
In 1855 the congregation got its first pastor and the chapel officially became a church.
At the beginning of the Second World War, the church roof suffered damage when a British plane was shot down. In 1942, two of the three church bells were confiscated and melted down by the Germans. On December 4th and 5th, 1944, the Americans shelled Metzing. The church was so damaged that services had to be celebrated in the nearby Café Kihl for several years . The war damage was repaired by 1960, the church got new bells and a heating system.
