The canton of Stiring-Wendel is a French constituency in the Forbach-Boulay-Moselle arrondissement , in the Moselle department and in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ).

history

The canton was founded on February 24, 1984 from parts of the then cantons Forbach-I and Forbach-II. Until 2015, 7 communities and unpopulated parts of the city of Forbach belonged to the canton of Stiring-Wendel. With the reorganization of the cantons in France, the number of municipalities rose to 14. The unpopulated parts of the city of Forbach and the municipalities of Petite-Rosselle and Schœneck moved to the canton of Forbach . In addition to the remaining 5 communes in the old canton, 9 of the 13 communes in the previous canton of Behren-lès-Forbach were added.

The canton is located in the northern half of the Moselle department on the border with Germany.

Until the nationwide reorganization of the French cantons in March 2015, the canton of Rombas consisted of the seven municipalities Alsting , Etzling , Forbach , Kerbach , Petite-Rosselle , Schœneck , Spicheren and Stiring-Wendel (main town). The area of ​​the city of Forbach, which belonged to the canton of Stiring-Wendel, was not populated. Its layout corresponded to an area of ​​52.26 km 2 . Before 2015 it had a different INSEE code than it does today, namely 5751.

politics

In the first ballot on March 22, 2015, none of the four candidate pairs achieved an absolute majority. In the runoff election on March 29, 2015, Elisabeth Haag / Constant Kieffer (both DVD) won against Kévin Pfeffer / Patricia Scheuer (both FN ) with 57.67% of the votes (turnout: 40.66%).
