The canton was created when the French cantons were redistributed in 2015. It includes the municipality of Terville and the entire city of Thionville, excluding the Garche and Kœking exclaves .

In the first ballot on March 22, 2015, none of the seven pairs of candidates achieved an absolute majority. In the runoff election on March 29, 2015, the team Pauline Lapointe-Zordan / Olivier Rech (both UD) won against Bertrand Mertz / Brigitte Vaisse (both PS ) with a share of the vote of 52.04% (turnout: 43.58%).
