The canton Sarreguemines ( German  canton Saargemünd ) is a subdivision of the arrondissement Sarreguemines in the Moselle department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ) in France . Its main town is Saargemünd .

history

The canton was founded on February 15, 1790 as part of the establishment of the départements as part of what was then the "Sarreguemines District". In 1801 he came to the new arrondissement of Sarreguemines. From 1871 to 1919 and from 1940 to 1944 there was no further subdivision of the then " Saargemünd district ". On February 24, 1984, parts of what was then the canton of Sarreguemines became the canton of Sarreguemines-Campagne . Until 2015, only the city of Sarreguemines belonged to the canton of Sarreguemines. With the reorganization of the cantons in France, the number of municipalities rose to 20 in 2015. 17 of the 21 municipalities of the previous canton of Sarreguemines-Campagne and Kalhausen from the previous canton of Rohrbach-lès-Bitche and Willerwald from the canton of Sarralbe were added to the previous municipality .

Until the nationwide reorganization of the French cantons in March 2015, the city of Sarreguemines belonged to the canton of Sarreguemines . Its layout corresponded to an area of ​​29.67 km 2 . Before 2015 it had a different INSEE code than it does today, namely 5730.

In the first ballot on March 22, 2015, none of the four candidate pairs achieved an absolute majority. In the runoff election on March 29, 2015, the pairing Jean-Claude Cunat / Evelyne Firtion (both DVD) won against Florence Giannetti / Pascal Jenft (both FN ) with a share of the vote of 59.33% (turnout: 43.78%).
