The canton of Volmunster was 2015, a Canton in Arrondissement of Sarreguemines , in the Moselle department and in the region of Lorraine in France .
The canton was located in the northern part of the Bitscher Ländchen ( Pays de Bitche ) , to which the cantons Bitche and Rohrbach-lès-Bitche also belonged, on the border with Saarland and Rhineland-Palatinate . The area is an agriculturally shaped plateau divided by some stream valleys running in a south-north direction. The highest place was Erching at 392 m, the lowest was Obergailbach at 294 m.
history
The canton was founded on March 4, 1790 as part of the establishment of the departments as part of what was then the Bitsch district. When the former canton of Breidenbach was dissolved in 1802 , the canton of Volmunster was expanded to include most of the localities in this canton.
From 1871 to 1919 and from 1940 to 1944 there was no further subdivision of the Saargemünd district at that time .
