Breidenbach is a French commune with 328 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Moselle department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ). It belongs to the Sarreguemines arrondissement and the Bitche canton and is part of the cross-border Palatinate Forest-Northern Vosges biosphere reserve .

geography

Breidenbach is located in the far north of Lorraine , a few kilometers south of the border with the Palatinate and north of Bitche at the confluence of Breidenbach and Burbach.

history

The name Bredebach appears for the first time in 1152, although according to evidence from 1172 it was probably a farm belonging to the Counts of Zweibrücken-Bitsch . This passed into the possession of the Cistercian Abbey of Neubourg near Haguenau and came to the Benedictine Abbey of Bouzonville in the 14th century . In the Thirty Years War the place was almost completely exterminated. Settlers from Picardy repopulated the Olsberg annexes at the end of the 17th century. Breidenbach was briefly the capital of a canton from 1790 to 1801 and was then assigned to Volmunster until 2014 .

Economy and Infrastructure

Breidenbach still has a rural infrastructure, although the majority of employees work as commuters in the economic centers on both sides of the state border. There is also a little tourism , so there are several Gites de France in Breidenbach .
