Sturzelbronn ( German Stürzelbronn , Lothr. Stirzelbrunn ) is a French commune with 176 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Moselle department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ) in the Northern Vosges . It belongs to the arrondissement of Sarreguemines and the canton of Bitche and was the seat of an important monastery in the Middle Ages . The inhabitants call themselves Sturzelbronnois .

geography

Sturzelbronn is the easternmost municipality in the Moselle department and the Bitscher Ländchen ( Pays de Bitche ). It is located on the Mühlenbach on the border with the Palatinate and the Bas-Rhin department .

history

The settlement originated on the Roman road from Bitche to Wissembourg . Fragments of sculptures still bear witness to this time. The Cistercian abbey , founded by Duke Simon I of Lorraine in 1135, is the actual origin of the village. In the Middle Ages, the Sturzelbronn Abbey had extensive possessions and tithe rights in the Bitscher Land, which at that time also comprised many towns that are now on the German side. In 1799 the abbey was closed.

At the beginning of the Franco-Prussian War there was a skirmish between German horsemen and French soldiers on August 1, 1870, during which a Bavarian Chevauleger saved the life of a fallen Prussian hussar . The military painter Louis Braun immortalized this scene in an oil painting that is exhibited today in the Bavarian Army Museum in Ingolstadt and was once used as a postcard motif. This made "The Battle of Stürzelbronn" a famous term in Bavarian military history.

Sturzelbronn was the last place in Alsace-Lorraine to be liberated from German occupation by the Allies during World War II, on March 19, 1945 in Operation Undertone .
