Volmunster ( German Wollmünster , Lothr. Wolminschter ) is a French commune with 793 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the northeast of the Moselle department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ). It belongs to the Sarreguemines arrondissement and the Bitche canton and is part of the cross-border Palatinate Forest-Northern Vosges biosphere reserve .

geography

Volmunster is located immediately south of the Saarland border , northwest of Bitche in the valley of the swallow . The Weiskirch district is two kilometers upstream , while Eschviller is located northeast at the end of a side valley.

history

The oldest traces of settlement date from the Gallo-Roman times. The written tradition begins in the 11th century. The place name ( Wilmonstre ) is interpreted as a personal name Wilo in connection with Münster . Until the French Revolution , the place was the seat of a church district, which can be traced back to the Hornbach monastery . Therefore Wollmünster had a church that was important for the small town, but it was destroyed in the Second World War.

From 1822, the only industrial company existed for a number of years from an alum and vitriol factory , which mainly produced colors for plaster of paris using local raw materials . Around 1900 it was planned to connect the place to Bitsch via a strategic railway line beginning in Zweibrücken, from which the Hornbachbahn, opened in 1913 and 1916, emerged . The return of Alsace-Lorraine to France after the First World War prevented further construction.

Canton capital

From 1790 to 2015, Volmunster was the capital of a canton of Volmunster , which was considerably enlarged in 1815 when the canton of Breidenbach was dissolved. Since 2015 Volmunster has been assigned to the canton of Bitche.

Culture and sights

The Vollmunster Platt Theater is committed to preserving the Lorraine dialect .

The Wollmünster mill (French: moulin Arnet or moulin de Volmunster ) is the last commercially operated flour mill in the area.

In the Moulin d ' Eschviller (German: Eschweiler Mühle ) built in 1731 , right on the state border, the nature park administration has set up a mill museum on the history of grain and sawmills. The European Mill Cycle Path, which starts and ends in Zweibrücken- Ixheim , also passes this still operational mill .
