Eschviller ( German Eschweiler ) is a district of the French commune Volmunster in the northeast of the Moselle department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ).
geography
Eschviller is located in the German-French border area. Immediately to the north is the border with the German federal states of Saarland and Rhineland-Palatinate . The next larger town, Bitche, is about 10 kilometers southeast of Eschviller.
Eschviller is part of the Bitscher Land and the Regional Nature Park of the Northern Vosges .
The village has its own school, a church and a bus stop that ensures a connection to Bitche and the surrounding villages.
history
Eschviller was first mentioned in 1271 under the name Eckeswilre or Ecksiwilre. From 1790 to 1813 Eschviller was an independent municipality. From 1790, the hamlet belonged to the canton of Volmunster, which no longer exists, and to the canton of Bitche since 2015 .
Eschville mill
Eschviller is known for the Eschweiler Mühle (Lorraine Eschwiller Muehle , French moulin d'Eschviller ), which is located a little away from the hamlet on the Schwalb river . It was built in 1731. After being destroyed in World War II , it has been restored since 1976 and expanded into a tourist attraction since the late 1980s. In addition to a museum, which is dedicated to everyday mill life, the building offers guest rooms and a restaurant with French cuisine. There are also ecological nature trails and an apiary on the grounds of the mill.
