Location of the canton Bitche in the Moselle department |
The canton of Bitche is a French constituency in the arrondissement of Sarreguemines , in the Moselle department and in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ). Its main town is Bitsch (French Bitche ).
history
The canton was founded on March 4, 1790 as part of the establishment of the departments as part of what was then the “District Bitsch”. When the then canton of Lemberg was dissolved in 1802 , the canton of Bitche was expanded to include most of the localities of this canton. From 1871 to 1919 and from 1940 to 1944 there was no further subdivision of the then " Saargemünd district ". Between 1802 and 1947 there were numerous changes in the area and community population. From 1947 to 2015, sixteen municipalities belonged to the canton of Bitche. With the reorganization of the cantons in France, the number of communes rose to 46 in 2015. All 16 communes of the previous canton of Volmunster and, with the exception of Kalhausen, all communes of the previous canton of Rohrbach-lès-Bitche (14 communes) were added to the previous 16 communes . Since January 1, 2017, the canton has also been congruent with the Bitscher-Land community association (French: Communauté de communes du Pays de Bitche ).
geography
The canton is almost congruent with the Bitscher Ländchen (French: Pays de Bitche ) and lies in the transition area to the Northern Vosges . The highest point at 510 m is at Garnfirst near Philippsbourg (German: Phlippsburg ), right on the border with the canton of Reichshoffen . The lowest point at 190 m is at Baerenthal (German Bärental ), also directly on the border with the canton of Reichshoffen (about 6 km away from the highest point).
Communities
The canton consists of 46 municipalities with a total of 34,317 inhabitants (as of 2017) on a total area of 602.37 km 2 :
