geography

Roppeviller is located in the far northeast of Lorraine on the border with the Palatinate on the Grunnelsbach .

history

Gallo-Roman evidence indicates settlement in the 2nd century. A Roman road led across the district. The village was first specifically mentioned in 1314 under the name Roppeweyler (supposedly from Rappo  = Germanic first name). Due to its remote location, Roppeviller has experienced a significant population decline. From 587 inhabitants in 1844, the population has fallen to around a quarter today.

Ecclesiastically, Roppeviller belonged to the parish Walschbronn until 1802 and since then to Volmunster . Politically, Roppeviller has been part of the canton of Bitche since 1790 .
