Lviv is a French commune with 1,455 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Moselle department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ). It belongs to the Sarreguemines arrondissement and the Bitche canton and is part of the Northern Vosges Natural Park .
geography
Lemberg is located in the northeast of Lorraine , in the Moselle department in the Bitscher Ländchen (French: Pays de Bitche ), south of Bitche on a high plateau from which streams flow on all sides, some of which have dug narrow valleys in the sandstone. Only on the plateau in the west to Enchenberg is a strip of open land, while otherwise the area is densely forested.
The most important bodies of water emanating from Lemberg are the Schwalb in the west and the Moderbach , a spring brook of the northern Zinsel , which rises in the Bildmühltal to the east . The streams around Lviv are often dammed up to form ponds.
history
The oldest traces of settlement date from the Neolithic Age . Some archaeological evidence has also been preserved from the Gallo-Roman era.
Lemberg grew out of the two settlement centers Unteres Dorf and Hohe First on the Schlossberg. The Annexe Münzthal formerly also belonged to Lemberg , today an industrial town with well-known crystal production .
Lemberg was briefly the capital of a canton from 1792 to 1802 and has since been assigned to the canton of Bitche.
During the Second World War , Lviv was the scene of heavy fighting and bombing, especially from December 1944 to April 15, 1945, which largely destroyed the place and claimed many victims.

Economy and Transport
At the end of the 19th century, glassmaking developed into a wide range of crystal glass manufacturing and processing companies in the south of Bitscher Ländchen, whose products were also sold on the markets in a wide area by travelers and marketers. The center was Münzthal (French: Saint-Louis-lès-Bitche ), where a renowned crystal factory still exists today. At the beginning of the 20th century Lviv also participated in this development and had an important glass industry. Some of these still remain today that process crystal glass by hand.
Lemberg train station on the Haguenau – Falck-Hargarten railway line, at an altitude of around 400 m, is the highest station in the Moselle department. Lviv is at the intersection of the D 37 and D 36 département roads.
