Enchenberg ( Lorraine Enschebärsch ) is a French commune with 1239 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Moselle department in the Grand Est region ( Lorraine until 2015 ). It belongs to the Sarreguemines arrondissement and the Bitche canton and is part of the Northern Vosges Natural Park .

geography

Enchenberg is located in the Bitscher Ländchen (French: Pays de Bitche ), on the western edge of the Northern Vosges forests and in the middle of orchards. In the north, Lambach and Siersthal border, in the north-west the district extends far out towards Petit-Réderching . To the south, the boundary to Rohrbach and Bining is also the boundary of the nature park. The border to the Montbronn district runs close to the village in the south at the edge of the forest .

The hamlets of Heiligenbronn with the Heiligenbronner Forest on the road to Petit-Réderching and Guisberg in a corner of the district in the far west belong to Enchenberg .

history

A statue of Mercurius made of sandstone is a testimony to the Gallo-Roman times .

In 1286 the place appeared for the first time as Ennechenberg . It lay on the route of the Lombard road from Flanders via Strasbourg to Italy .

Guisberg is mentioned in 1736 as a property of the Sturzelbronn Abbey. Heiligenbronn was owned by Claude-Charles de la Lance de Moranville , chief hunter of the Duke of Lorraine .

Attractions

Chapel of Sainte-Vérène (Verena Chapel)

Many Lorraine crosses are still present as testimonies of faith in the area. The main attraction is the Verena Chapel , the original structure of which dates back to the 16th century and which was renewed after the arrival of Swiss immigrants who had been recruited by the sovereign after the Thirty Years' War and was given its current name. Every year on May 1st, it is the starting point of the largest procession in Lorraine, which leads across the 18th century Way of the Cross to the village church of St. Peter, which was renovated around 1861 in neo-Gothic style.
