history
In the course of the administrative reorganization of year IX (1801), the “3. Arrondissement communal ”(Metz) from parts of several former cantons of the canton Gorze with then 31 municipalities. Apart from a few changes in the existing structure due to the incorporation or formation of new municipalities, the canton remained unchanged until 1871. As a result of the provisions of the Peace Treaty of Frankfurt , the canton was divided: the 12 communities that remained French formed the canton of Chambley-Bussières in the Arrondissement of Briey since 1873 . The remaining 18 continued to form the canton of Gorze - now in the Metz district. The seat of the justice of the peace was moved to Ars on the Moselle (Ars-sur-Moselle) as early as 1878; In the capital of the canton, only regular court days of the now local court Ars were held. In 1950 the canton's largest town was declared its main town (Chef-lieu) and the canton was renamed accordingly.
