Supreme NTM

Suprême NTM or only NTM is a French hip-hop - group from the Paris suburbs Saint-Denis .

history

The group, made up of Joey Starr (Didier Morville) and Kool Shen (Bruno Lopes), is known within French hip-hop for their hostility to the authorities, their violent lyrics and litigation with the French state.

The name NTM is an abbreviation for Nique Ta Mère 'Fick Your Mother' (translated to mean motherfucker ). The group also interprets the abbreviation as le nord transmet le message `` the north transmits the message '' and alludes to the fact that in most French cities, especially the banlieues (suburbs) in the north are both social hot spots and centers of an independent culture.

Stylistically, the group can be assigned to hardcore rap with funk and soul , later reggae elements are also found. Her music is very political and directed against class differences and racism . While they glorified violence on their first albums, they later developed a more distant relationship to the subject. Some songs like Pose ton Gun 'Put the gun down' are specifically directed against violence.

In March 2008, Kool Shen and Joey Starr announced the reunion of Supreme NTM for four concerts on September 18th, 19th, 20th and 22nd in Paris-Bercy . The whole thing was expanded to a tour of France a few days later. The band had split up ten years earlier. In an interview, both artists left open whether the reunification will be followed by a new album.

From March 8 to 10, 2018, Suprême NTM played three sold out concerts on the occasion of their 30th anniversary in the AccorHotels Arena in Paris-Bercy.

Controversy

Criminal proceedings were brought against the band in 1993 because of their song J'appuie sur la gâchette , 'I press the trigger' , which ended in an acquittal. When they criticized the police at a concert in La Seyne-sur-Mer on July 14, 1996 , they again called for violence. The concert was a counter-event to a party of the Front National (FN). In 1995 he won the mayoral elections in nearby Toulon and on July 14th, the French national holiday, Jean-Marie Le Pen celebrated a big public celebration together with the FN Mayor Jean-Marie Le Chevallier .

This time in Toulon they were sentenced to a fine and two months in prison. It was the first judgment in the history of the French Republic in which artists were directly convicted of a testimony they made. The process attracted a correspondingly large amount of public attention. Figaro alone received 400 letters to the editor, most of which described NTM as decadent anarchists or even accused them of wanting to wage a psychological war against France. The Liberation criticized the judgment sharply, however, and pointed out that in the past artists who had made similarly provocative statements had not been convicted. Kool Shen commented, “People are able to think for themselves. [...] The people are not stupid, they don't take it literally. "
