La Seyne-sur-Mer ( Occitan : La Sanha de Mar ) is a city in southern France, southwest of Toulon . With 63,936 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), it is the second largest town in the Var department after Toulon . history
In the Middle Ages, there was only a small village on the site of today's La Seyne-sur-Mer at the site of a natural harbor called La Sagno. Under Louis XIV , this port was included in the expansion of the war port of Toulon . New forts were built and the number of inhabitants grew, so that the king granted the community town charter in 1657 and the right to bear a coat of arms in 1700. In 1691 a trading and fishing port was established; In 1711 the first shipyard was added. Even Napoleon Bonaparte caused by the construction of additional forts in 1811 (today's "Fort Napoléon") for a further surge in development. From 1853 iron ships were built at the Forges et Chantiers de la Méditerranée (FCM) shipyard ; the operation went mid-1966 after the construction of RMS Saga Fjord in the bankruptcy . In 1859 the city was connected to the French railway network via the Marseille – Ventimiglia line. The development continued unabated in the 20th century: While 21,002 people lived in the city in 1901, it is now about three times as many.
Attractions
The main sights worth mentioning are the fortifications, above all Fort Balaguier from 1636, which also contains a maritime museum, as well as the forts de l'Éguillette and Napoléon and the battery de Peyras. Also worth seeing is a folding railway bridge over the harbor entrance from 1917. A popular destination are the Sablettes, a dune landscape with individual green areas on the Saint-Mandrier peninsula.
There is the Michel Pacha marine biology institute (in a neo-Moorish palace), where the data from the Antares neutrino telescope is also evaluated.
