Saint-Mandrier-sur-Mer is a French municipality with 5862 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Var department in the region of Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur . It belongs to the canton of La Seyne-sur-Mer-2 in the arrondissement of Toulon .
geography
Saint-Mandrier-sur-Mer is located on the Presqu'île de Cépet peninsula , which protrudes into the bay of Toulon, only connected to the mainland by a narrow sandbank. To the south, the rocky coast falls largely steeply to the sea. In the north lies the harbor with the old town center, protected in a wide bay. The highest point of the peninsula, which, with its slate formations, is part of the Maures massif , lies 124 m above sea level.
history
In 1268 the sources first mentioned an Ecclesia Sanctae Mandreae , whose name goes back to Mandrianus and Flavianus , two Saxon soldiers in the Ostrogothic army, who were baptized in Toulon and who settled on the peninsula.
In 1950, Saint-Mandrier -sur-Mer became an independent municipality when it was separated from La Seyne-sur-Mer .
