Le Lavandou ( Provence Lou Lavandou ) is a French municipality with 5985 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) on the Mediterranean coast at the foot of the Massif des Maures in the Var department in the region of Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur . In front of it are the islands of Port-Cros and Île du Levant , which, along with Porquerolles, belong to the Îles d'Hyères .
origin of the name
The word "Lavandou" is primarily reminiscent of lavender ( French lavande ) due to the similarity of the name . In fact, as in many places in Provence, a species of lavender (lavandula stoechas) grows in the ridges of the Massif des Maures. The name of lavender in the original language, the Provençal , is Queirélé .
The most likely answer to the question of the origin of the name was given by the Provencal poet and Nobel Prize winner Frédéric Mistral , who gives the word «lavoir» (French for wash house) as the origin of the name. The town hall of Le Lavandou has a painting depicting the hamlet of Lavandou in 1736. In the foreground of the depiction is a wash house in which the local women do their laundry.
History and administration
Until the beginning of the 20th century, Le Lavandou still belonged to the city of Bormes-les-Mimosas . In 1909 the residents demanded the status of an independent municipality.
The State Council accepted the division of the two localities and on May 25, 1913, the statutory independence of Le Lavandou was proclaimed by the then President Raymond Poincaré .
The municipality of Le Lavandou, Mairie du Lavandou, is located on Place Ernest Reyer . A branch of the town hall has been set up in Cavaliere .

Interesting
On September 19, 2000, the then mayor, Gil Bernardi , forbade the population to die in Le Lavandou. The reason for this was the overcrowding of the local cemetery and the ban on expanding the cemetery towards the sea by the Nice Administrative Court. Only those who had previously reserved a place in the cemetery could be buried.
