The Îles d'Hyères ( German "Hyèrische Insel" ), in antiquity Stoichaden ( Greek Στοιχάδες νῆσοι , Latin Stoechades insulae ), are a French group of islands in the Mediterranean . The islands are off the Côte d'Azur near Hyères . Because of the golden shimmering cliffs , they are also known as Îles d'Or (Eng. "Gold Islands").
The three main islands are Porquerolles , Port-Cros and Île du Levant . Together they have an area of around 28 km². The chain of islands is continued in an approximately westerly direction from the Giens peninsula , which is connected to the mainland by a double tombolo .
The archipelago of the Hyèrian Islands is geologically an extension of the Massif des Maures , from which it was separated about 20,000 years ago by rising sea levels. The climate is Mediterranean with mild winters and hot, dry summers.
