The Battle of Jieting was part of Zhuge Liang's Northern Expeditions .
Jieting was a crossroads for supplies, and Zhuge Liang sent his generals Ma Su and Wang Ping there as overseers. But Ma Su did not listen to Wang Ping's military advice. Relying only on tactical scriptures, he wanted to occupy the highest point of the battlefield and camped at the summit. He turned down Wang Ping's advice to store in the valley because of the cheaper water supply. This tactical error enabled Wei general Zhang He to encircle the hill. Ma Su managed to break through with Wang Ping's help, but the army and camp were lost.
Because of the loss of Jieting, supplies for Zhuge Liang became extremely delicate and he was forced to retreat to Hanzhong . He then executed Ma Su for his failure, even though he had previously valued him for his intelligence.
