He saw through the tactics of the enemy strategist Zhuge Liang in the battle of Mount Dingjun , but was unable to assert himself against his superior Xiahou Yuan . Xiahou Yuan fell in battle, and Cao Cao's side lost Hanzhong City .

Under Cao Cao's successor Cao Pi , Zhang He was appointed "Right General". At the Battle of Jieting he was able to surround the Shu strategist Ma Su and defeat him. After Zhuge Liang withdrew from an attack in 231, Zhang He followed him to Mumen, where he was ambushed and fell.
